Hurlers survive late scare to overcome Carrigtwohill

Carraig na bhFear are safely through to the draw for the third round of the East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship, but it took a big effort to overcome a strong Carrigtwohill team who fought to the end. In perfect conditions in Watergrasshill, both sides produced some excellent scores and a late comeback from Carrigtwohill provided a close and exciting final 10 minutes. Management handed youth its fling, with the Forde twins, James and John, making their first starts at this level, joined by James Meehan at midfield, also making his first championship start. We opened the scoring in the first minute with a wonderful point from the left corner from John Forde and by the 7th minute had extended the lead to 0-04 to 0-0.  Martin Hickey was the star performer in the opening stages and a wonderful point from distance was the highlight of the opening stages. Carrigtwohill responded with two points in quick succession as the sides traded scores for the next 10 minutes. Carraigs corner forwards were looking particularly sharp but the presence of an extra man in the Carrigtwohill defence saw them repel alot of pressure successfully. After 20 minutes we lead 0-09 to 0-06 and but for a couple of good saves from the Carrigtwohill keeper, the margin could have been wider. John Forde was in great form on the frees another monster point from Martin Hickey and a fine point from Paul Murphy saw us lead by three at the break, 0-12 to 0-09. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Carraig stretching the lead only for Carrigtwohill...

Junior B Hurlers win in Killeagh

The sun shone in Killeagh on Friday night last as Carraig took on the home side in the third round of the East Cork JHL Div 4. Short a number of regulars, Carraig fielded a team consisting of 11 U21s, no less than 6 of whom are U17. Added to that mix was the experience of Conor Hegarty in goal, Mark Crowley and William Spillane in defence and Barrie Casey at midfield. It was Carraig who started the better of the two sides, with John Forde opening the scoring ealy on. Conor Hayes was causing the Killeagh defence huge problems and chipped in with a few great points over the hour. Our first goal came early when Oisin Crowley swept home a breaking ball in the square from a John Forde free. Oisin was involved in the second goal also, setting up Conor O’Brien in the right corner forward position and he made no mistake with a well placed shot. Our defence was solid throughout, with Michael Ahern and James Forde clearing their lines well at every opportunity. At the break we lead 2-08 to 1-04, an injury to centre back and captain William Spillane being the only cause for concern. For the second half, Joe Murphy dropped from midfield to centre back where he did very well, while James Meehan joined Barrie Casey in midfield, forming a dominant pairing. John Forde continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over from frees as Killeagh tried hard to reduce the margin. A third goal came for Carraig after some great work from Conor Hayes on the right wing, with Conor O’Brien...
