Minor footballers lose in East Region final

Rebel Óg East Minor B Football Championship Final Aghabullogue 2-14 Carraig na bhFear 1-06 Fri 12th Sept – Ballinlough No joy for our Minor Footballers in their attempts to make it a Rebel Og East double on Friday night, as a sharper Aghabullogue outfit were good value for their 2-14 to 1-06 win. Carraig started well and opened the scoring through the lively Oisín Crowley, but the mid Cork side quickly took a grip on proceedings with 4 points in succession to lead by 3 points after 15 minutes of play. Carraig were under pressure in defence, with Aghabullogue dominating from our kickouts, but some good play from Gary Geaney and Brendan Murphy kept us in the game. Adam O’Sullivan picked off our second point of the game to reduce the gap to two points, but a 10 minute blitz for Aghabullogue put them firmly in control, notching up 1-05 without reply to leave the score 1-09 to 0-02 after 24 minutes. Carraig looked to be dead and buried at this stage, but a point from Oisín from a free got us back on the scoresheet. This was quickly followed by a great drive through the defence from Brendan Murphy and his finished powerfully to the net to reduce the deficit to five points. Another point in the 28th minute had the margin down to five, but Aghabullogue got the last score of the half to lead 1-10 to 1-04 at the break. The second half lacked the fluency of the first, with Aghabullogue content to sit deep and break at speed, while Carraig had to come out and...

Junior A Football Championship Quarter Final – Castlemartyr give walkover

Unfortunately, Castlemartyr have withdrawn from this Sundays East Cork Junior A Football Championship quarter final, with the resulting walkover meaning we progress to face defending champions Glenbower Rovers in the semi final in a few weeks time. This is a less than ideal outcome for the team, as we have now gone five whole months without a football being kicked in Championship action, an unsatisfactory situation which must surely be raised at board level in the near future. Keep an eye out for details of the upcoming semi final here and on our Twitter and Facebook pages in the weeks to come. In the other quarter finals, Dungourney face Midelton and Carrigtwohill play Cobh, with both games taking place this weekend. Glenbower Rovers have been nominated to represent Imokilly in the County Championship next Friday night against...

Minor Hurlers claim Championship glory

Rebel Óg East Minor B Hurling Final Sat 6th Sept Venue: Ballinlough Carraig na bhFear 1-16 Donoughmore 1-14 Carraig na bhFear are the Rebel Og East Minor B hurling champions for 2014 after a great win over Donoughmore in the final in Ballinlough. There was just two points separating the sides at the end in what was always a close and competitive game. Donoughmore started the brighter of the two sides and two quick points gave them an early lead, as Carraig seemed to suffer with some early nerves. Ryan galvin struck for Carraigs opening point from play and both sides began to hurl well, with Carraig captain Brendan Murphy showing well for the ball at full forward and Shane Farrell and Adam O’Sullivan working hard along side him, the sides were level after five minutes. The next 10 minutes belonged to Donoughmore however, a series of well taken points from frees and from play pushed them into a four point lead, 0-06 to 0-02. Carraig saw a good goal chance saved by the in form Donoughmore keeper and some wayward passing in attack meant that scores were hard to come by. Donoughmores lively attack was causing problems for our defence too, but the switch of David Sweeney to wing back mid way through the half helped to stem the tide somewhat and with Michael Ahern sweeping up at centre back, Carraig began to claw their way back into the game. Oisin Crowley was unerring from frees and with Murphy and Farrell continuing to threaten, the sides were level again by the 20th minute. A point for Donoughmore was...
