Footballers fall to first league defeat

East Cork JFL Div 1 Carraig na bhFear 1-04 Lisgoold 1-11 Venue: College pitch Disappointment for our Junior A Footballers as a slicker and well drilled Lisgoold side took the points on offer in the college on Sunday. Playing into a strong breeze in the opening half, Carraig struggled to get up to the pace and intensity of the visitors in the opening stages A John Walsh point after 10 minutes our opening score. As Lisgoold dominated possession, we trailed 0-03 to 0-01 before a Timmy Geaney goal sprung the team into life. Carraig created two further goal chances in quick succession after this, but the finishes weren’t applied on both occasions. Lisgoold kicked four points before the break to lead by three on a score of 0-07 to 1-01 at the change of ends. The second half didn’t get much better for Carraig, with passings going astray and Lisgoold dominating the middle third. A soft goal for the visitors on 45 minutes, when the ball appeared to be heading wide but struck the post and ended up in the net, handed Lisgoold a 6 point lead they would never relinquish. Second half points from Aaron Dorgan and Timmy Geaney were all Carraig could muster. The aforementioned Timmy, Martin Hickey and Oisin Crowley tried hard to bring Carraig back into the side in the closing stages but it was not to be as we went down to our first defeat of the season. While the performance was not up to scratch, the team will have plenty to take from it and no doubt rectify this week on the training...
