Determined Display Sees Carraig Prevail Into Next Round

East Cork Junior C Hurling Championship Carraig na bhFear 3-17, Fr O’Neills 1-09 Castleyons, August 26th 2018 15 souls wore the famed red and green colours last Sunday morning and produced a performance of honesty and skill that balmed some of the wounds from the previous nights Championship loss. This was the first round of the Junior C Hurling Championship, a competition in which the winning in trophy is in honour of a former club member who quite often demonstrated those qualities of honesty and skill in former days, namely Micheál O Foghlu.  And on assessment of this performance, there is a good possibility that the cup may rest on the banks of the Glashaboy River for the first time ever. Carraig took a while to settle into this game, as did Fr. O Neills, with a difficult cross field wind making it hard for forwards to adjust their radar. However, with Con Burns i mbarr a reime ar an daichead line, do chuaigh Carraig chun tosaigh go tapaidh.  Points from Burns, Peter O’Sullivan and Conor Hayes, followed by a fortuitous goal by Burns had Carraig 1-04 to 0-02 ahead after 13 minutes. O Neills replied with a goal of their own, but it only spurred Carraig on.  A dominant half back line of Neally, Aherne and Cronin, ably assisted by a solid midfield partnership of Hayes and Jack Aherne kept a constant supply of ball ag dul I dtreo na tosaithe.  More points from Thomas Coleman, Brian Sheehan and Cormac Hill kept Carraig in the ascendency and a further boost was received when Peter O’Sullivan scored a second...

End of the Road for Carraig Hurlers as Harnedy reigns Supreme

East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship Quarter Final Carraig na bhFear 1-13 St. Ita’s 1-16 Pairc Cluain Mualt, Mainistir na Corann. August 25, 2018   It ended as it had begun, with Seamus Harnedy troubling the score keeper one last time. In the last seconds of injury time, Harnedy knocked over his eight point of the evening and with that Carriag na bhFear’s sojourn in the East Cork Hurling Championship came to an end. The dismay on the faces of the players was all too evident as they trudged off the field, downcast in the knowledge that Carraig never got to the pitch of the game and were always chasing St Ita’s coat tails for the entire 65 minutes or so of game time. A winter of why/how and ,maybe’s lies ahead. Regrets….maybe a few more than Frank Sinatra mentioned. The game had its first seminal moment within 60 seconds of the start of the game. Seamus Harnedy raced onto a breaking ball off the full back line, took it at pace and struck a venomous shot to the top right hand corner of the net.  It set the tone of the game. Itas added another point before Carraig started to respond.  John Forde got Carraig off the mark from a free after six minutes, yet Ita’s scored again, a point from play. Gradually the Carraig forwards started to make inroads. Good play by Brendan Murphy and Timmy Geaney created a goal chance that David Sweeney converted with aplomb. Within another minute Sweeney landed a monster shot from the wing and Carraig were within a point, 1-03 to 1-02....
