Carraig defeat Cobh in Junior A Hurling League

Imokilly/Avondhu JHL Div 1 Section 1
Sat 7th June
Venue: Carraig na bhFear
Carraig na bhFear 0-23 Cobh 2-13

Our penultimate outing in the Cavanaghs of Fermoy JHL Div 1 saw us take the points after a very entertaining match against Cobh on Saturday last in Carraig. The early stages were tight with both sides exchanging early scores, Cobh opening the scoring before we replied with two points from Aaron Dorgan and John Forde. Slowly but surely we began to take control around the middle of the field, helped in no small part by a dominant display of fielding from Martin Hickey, who had a great game throughout. With Aidan Hegarty working extremely hard at centre forward, those around him began to profit, with points from Paul Murphy, John Walsh and John Forde opening up a lead.
In defence, Brian Hegarty was having a fine game while Timmy Geaney was having a great battle with his opposite number. John Forde was unerring from frees and as Cobhs discipline began to wane, he punished them ruthlessly as we extended the lead to 0-12 to 0-08 at half time.
The second half saw Cobh get off to a better start and an early goal was followed quickly by the equalising point. Carraig did not panic and the forwards began to dominate again, with further points from John Walsh, Cian Dorgan, Aidan Hegarty and Martin Hickey pushing us clear again. Cobh kept in touch and with 10 minutes remaining, closed the margin to a point with a second goal.
But once again Carraig bounced back and had three points in the space of two minutes to cancel that goal out and extend the lead. Brian Hegarty got forward for two well taken points in the closing quarter, both expertly struck from the left wing. Shane Horgan at full back cleared some late Cobh attacks as they sought to reduce the margin, but at the final whistle Carraig emerged with a four point win.
This win now puts us into the semi final of this competition for the first time since its inception four years ago, a fine achievement. As well as that, it was great preparation for the 1st round of the Championship, with Carrigtwohill looming large on the horizon in the coming weeks.
We have one league match remaining v Ballyhooly and this should be scheduled in the coming weeks.
