Carraig Show Character to Secure a Draw

East Cork Junior Hurling League Div 1

Wed 23rd May – Cobh
Cobh 0-19 Carraig na bhFear 0-19

In the third round of fixtures for the East Cork Junior A Hurling League, Carraig na bhFear visited the seaport town of Cobh on a sunny Wednesday evening, May 23. In a game that was placed with a good tempo and with a little bit of bite from both sides, it took an equalizing ’65 free from John Forde to earn Carraig the draw. A fair result you might ask? Probably, as both sides had good periods of dominance without being able to pull away fully from their opponents.

The first half was fast and open. Cobh started well and after 12 minutes took a lead of six points to two. The Carraig full back line was under a bit of pressure at this time, but gradually Paul Geaney started to nullify the dangerous Cobh number 14.  Increased possession won at midfield and in the half back lead to Carraig shooting some excellent points. John and James Forde, Timmy Geaney and Paul Murphy shot points from distance and with the onset of half time, Carraig went in ahead, leading by twelve points to eleven.

Do thosaigh na fir on Charraig go maith sa dara leath. Do thiomain Timmy Geaney dha chuilin den scoth on taobh dheis den bpairc.  Do bhi Aaron Dorgan, Gary Geaney agus Michael Aherne i mbarr a reime sa line leath chulai agus da bhri sin, do bhi a lan seilbh ag Carraig. Ach do chiallamar tri seans lena cheile chun cul a fhail agus mar a deirtear “Doirt do dheoch is beidh tart ort”.

With ten minutes left, Carraig lead eighteen points to fourteen, but Cobh came with a strong finish and whittled the lead down after garnering a few easy frees. With time almost up, a free from 80 yards was put over by the home team and they looked like they had won the points. But in one last attack Carraig engineered a chance which was blocked down for a ’65 metre free. Nervelessly John Forde guided his shot over and both sides went home with positives and negatives to address.
