Best of luck Cathriona and Sile
  17/08/2008

Due to the inclement weather over the weekend, The Cork V Tipperary All Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Semi Final was postponed yesterday.
This fixture is of particular interest to those of us in the Carraig na bhFear club, as this year, both the captain and vice captain of the team hail from our Parish and both have represented our club successfully at underage level in the past.
Cathriona Foley captains the team from full back and she is ably assisted by her vice Captain Sile Burns, who will be hoping to add to her impressive scoring tally in the full forward line. Both of these players played for Carraig na bhFear up to Under 12 level, until the foundation of the Rockban club in 1997. Last year, they were key members of the Muskerry team that won the Cork Senior Championship, with Cathriona captaining the side on that occasion.

We wish the girls the very best of luck in their efforts to reach the final.

The match has been refixed for next Sunday, 24th August in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny. Throw in is 1:30pm.

Annual General Meeting
  13/12/2007

The Annual General Meeting took place on Thursday the 13th December in the Community Hall. The meeting was well attended with 55 members present to discuss the plans for the year ahead.
After the minutes of the 2006 AGM were read out by outgoing secretary Cathal Horgan, who also addressed the meeting by giving his report on club activity for the year.

Cathal noted that steady progress was made in the Junior A Hurling Championship, with Carraig winning a first round game for the first time in a number of years by defeating Midleton. Next up was a quarter final defeat to reigning champions Dungourney. After relegation the previous season, the A's secured an immediate return to Divison 1 of the hurling league going the season unbeaten in this competition. The Junior B hurlers also had an improved year and were unlucky not to make the division 3 league final. They were defeated in a close game at the quarter final stages by a more experienced Dungourney outfit.
In Junior A football, after beating Castlelyons in the first round in mid march, a dissapointing defeat to Killeagh saw us exit the championship at an early stage. The B footballers had a first round victory over near neighbours Glenville and were beaten by Erins Own in the next round in a close match. The Junior B footballers had an excellent league campaign, but this ended in disapppointment whena a much weakened side was defeated by Ballinacurra in the Division 3 league final. The team is promoted to Division 2 for 2008.

The U21 footballers made the step up to A grade this season following on from winning the B championship in 2006. They were defeated by Glanmire in the opening round of the championship in a game which the team will no doubt feel they left behind them. The U21 hurlers also made the step up to A grade having also won the B title the year before. They were defeated by St. Catherines in the first round on a day when the team did not do itself justice and Catherines ran out worthy winners. However with only 3 players from the U21 squad overage for 2008, it is hoped that the lads can improve on their outings this year in both codes.

The Minor footballers were disappointingly defeated by Fr. O'Neills in the semi final of the A grade Championship, but gained revenge for this by beating the same opponents in the league final. They then went on to reach the County Semi Final of the league, where they were defeated after a replay by Macroom.
In hurling, the Minors defeated Youghal in the semi final of the A grade Championship after extra time, having made the step up after winning the County B title in 2006. In the final, they were defeated by a well prepared Carrigtwohill side, who went on to win the County title later in the year. Currently the Hurlers are awaiting to play the hurling league final against Carrigtwohill.

The treasurers report was presented by Mick Sherlock, who is also stepping down having completed his three year term. It was noted that costs are rising and we are experiencing a small drop in sales of club lotto tickets. The Club lotto is our primary source of income for both adult and juvenille clubs, the trend towards a decline in sales is something that needs to be addressed.

Next on the agenda was the Chairmans report. Outgoing chairman Shane Horgan thanked the Lotto Committee for the excellent work they do week in week out in running the draw, he also emphasised the need for all club members to assist the Lotto committee in the year ahead. Shane has been heavily involved in the discussions for the new club development during his terms as both Secretary and Chairman. He thanked Mick Sherlock and Niall Cronin, Solicitor Richard O'Sullivan and Engineer Ger Neff for their work and commitment in the negotiations on behalf of the club. He thanked and congratulated the Community Council and Scoil an Athar Tadhg for their co-operation in the development plans and hoped that the whole community will benefit from the new facilities for many years to come.

For their role as East Cork Board delegates, Shane thanked Donal Foley and Pat Hegarty for representing the club throughout the year. He also commended the juvenille club for their continued success in 2007 and emphasised the need  for the Adult club members to support the work of the juvenille club more as they club grows and playing numbers continue to increase at underage level.
In 2007, Martin Hickey represented the club on the Cork Minor Football team and won a munster championship medal as they defeated Kerry. Shane congratulated him on his great achievement. He also congratulated Timmy Geaney and Diarmuid O'Driscoll, who won All Ireland Third Level medals with UCC and Mary Immaculate College respectively in the past year. Shane wrapped up his address by thanking all the club members and wished all incoming officers the best in their new roles.
