East Cork JHL Division 3 Result:
Carraig na bhFear 2-19 Sarsfields 2-21
Riverstown, July 17.
A first half performance that lacked aggression, belief and simple honesty of effort from the Carraig
Junior Hurlers was replaced by a totally different display in the second half that nearly won the
points on offer in this Round 3 game of the East Cork Junior Hurling League.
Carraig trailed by 10 points at half time, fifteen points to five and it could have been worse. An
overworked defensive unit in which D O Driscoll and T Sheehan were to the fore front, just about
kept Carraig in the game at half time. Sarsfields were scoring points for fun at times with little
pressure being exerted on their defenders or players in the middle third.
On the resumption of the second half, Carraig gradually ate into the Sars lead. R Spillane, S Farrell
and P O’Sullivan hit a number of good points and the lead was down to 4 points with 8 minutes left
to play, 0-19 to 0-15. In a welter of excitement, both teams plundered two goals each in a four
minute period.
Carraig managed to level the game with a few classy points from the two O Sullivans
in the full forward line and it was 2-19 apiece heading into injury time. Sars rallied and went two in
front in the blink of an eye, yet Carraig fought back and were extremely unlucky not to goal again as
a blistering shot hit the crossbar from P O’Sullivan. Carraig forced a number of late 21 yard frees but
could not breach the Sars defence, in which the home custodian pulled a number of fine saves.
A first half performance that was simply not good enough, a second half performance that could
lead to something.
