Carraig na bhFear’s Under 21 footballers began their 2018 campaign with a spirited display against our neighbours Bride Rovers in the East Cork “C” Championship at Rathcormac on Sunday March 11. Unfortunately the result went against the men from Carraig after a valiant effort.
The first half did not go according to plan for Carraig. Under pressure for long periods and playing against the elements, Carraig reitired at half time 1-7 to 0-1 in arrears. Ach, tar eis leath am, do bhi tine ina bholg ag gach imreoir on Carraig na bhFear. The game had a changed impetus as Carraig took control, driven on by Michael Aherne at centre back. Strong midfield play from Jack Aherne and Brendan Murphy lead to Carraig scoring three goals in a blistering spell. Oisin Crowley, Paul Sheehan and the aforementioned Brendan Murphy scoring the majors. With time nearly up, Carraig led by one point. However the men from the Bride engineered an equaliser and the game went to extra time. The score after normal time was Carraig na bhFear 3-5 Bride Rovers 1-11.
The first period of extra time was close. Carraig managed to score two well worked points, whilst Bride Rovers responded with a goal and a point. A two point deficit was all that was in it. However, sa dara leath, do thainig tuirse ar fir Charraig na bhFear. With more artillery from the sub bench making a huge difference, Bride Rovers plundered a further goal and three points to take the match by 7 points. Final score Carraig na bhFear 3-8 Bride Rovers 3-15.
Overall, a match that Carraig could have won, but ultimately we were just short a bit of extra manpower and luck on the day.
Ach beidh la eile ag an bPaorach. The second round draw should take place during the week, with second round matches provisionally pencilled in for weekend of March 17/18.
