Late point sends East Cork Championship to Dungourney

East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship Final Replay
Wed 14th Sept - Carrigtwohill
Carraig na bhFear 1-14 Dungourney 0-18

And so it was on to Carrigtwohill on Wednesday night, for the first ever East Cork Junior A Hurling final to be played under lights. With a huge crowd in attendance, perfect conditions for hurling and two teams playing some great hurling, the atmosphere was electric and the game which followed did not disappoint those who made the trip.
Carraig made two changes to the starting line up, with Paul Geaney and Ronan Spillane both being introdcued from the start for this game. Carraig opened the scoring through full forward and Captain Paul Murphy but Dungourney replied with two early points from play as the game picked up from where it left off the previous Saturday. Spillane was having a huge impact in attack and he added a fine point from the right wing before Murphy followed up with two points to give Carraig an early lead. John O'Sullivan then pointed a free before Dungourney notched up two points in reply. Midway through the half, Carraig struck for the games only goal when Dungourneys goalkeeper dropped a high ball under pressure and O'Sullivan showed great skill to flick the ball to the back of the net to put us 1-05 to 0-04 in front. When the same player added his second free shortly afterwards, Carraig looked to be in a good position.
Dungourney then got a grip on proceedings at midfield and began to chip into the Carraig lead with a succession of points, three from frees and two from play. By the 25th minute they were level and then took the lead with a point from play before Carraig got back on track with a point from Spillane again, his second of the half. Another point from Dungourney, again from a free, looked to be sending them into the break ahead, but Paul O'Keeffe was on target for Carraig in the closing stages after a fine run from the right wing to leave the sides level at the break Carraig 1-08 Dungourney 0-11.

The second half saw Carraig come flying out of the traps, firing over four unanswered points in the opening minutes. A Free from O'Sullivan was follwed by a huge effort from the outstanding Timmy Geaney, while Ronan Spillane and Paul Murphy also found the target. This purple patch was followed by a frustrating ten minutes however, as Carraigs accuracy deserted them and six successive wides followed, while Dungourney replied with two points in the same period. Dungourney then had the ball in the back of the net, but the whistle had been blown before the Dungourney man took his shot and a point from a 21 yard free was their reward instead.
Carraig then lost defender Timmy Geaney, who was having a huge game in defence, to injury and two further points saw Dungourney take the lead with under five mintues remaining. Carraig replied well, with John O'Sullivan striking a free from distance on the right wing to level matters. He then repeated the trick and Carraig were back in front with full time approaching. From the puckout however, Dungourney replied immediately from distance to tie things up again 1-14 to 0-17. Both sides fought hard for the ball and Carraig looked to have earned a free on the right wing when sub Aaron Dorgan was clearly pulled back while gaining possession, but instead the ball was cleared and Dungourney earned a free 50 yards out, which was converted and proved to be the match winning score after over 120 minutes of championship hurling.
Heartbreak for this Carraig side, who gave absolutely everything throughout the year and left no stone unturned as they went in search of the clubs second title at this level. We have no doubt they will regroup and be back for another shot at the championship in the year ahead. Congratulations to Dungourney, worthy champions and we wish them the best of luck in their County campaign.

All Square in East Cork Final

East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship Final
Sat 10th Sept - Midleton
Carraig na bhFear 1-08 Dungourney 0-11

A late point for Dungourney saw an exciting East Cork final finish in a draw in Midleton on Sat 10th Sept, as Carraig produced a battling display throughout against the favourites. Dungourney opened the scoring in the opening minute as the game started at a frantic pace, but from the puckout, Carraig replied with a point from wing back Martin Hickey, who drove through the middle and converted from distance. Aidan Hegarty then put Carraig in front almost immediately with a huge point from midfield. The game then saw both sides create good goalscoring chances but Conor Hegarty in the Carraig goal made some fine saves to keep Dungourney at bay.
With 10 minutes gone, Dungourney equalised from a free before they took the lead through a point from play, but Carraig were back level again soon after thanks to a fine point from the left wing from Paul O'Keeffe, shooting over in difficult wind conditions from a narrow angle. The sides exchanged points again,John O'Sullivan on target from a free, before a long ball into the square from martin Hickey fell to Aaron Dorgan who pulled first time to the net for a goal for Carraig. Dungourney responded with a point, before O'Keeffe hit his second of the evening, again from the left wing. Carraig could not extend their lead however and Dungourney pointed twice to finish the half strongly and leave just the minimum between the sides at the break, 1-05 to 0-07 in Carraigs favour.
The second half proved to be an even tighter affair, with both sides finding scores hard to come by. Two points from O'Sullivan frees for Carraig were replied to by two points from Dungourney in the opening 15 minutes of the half, before O'Sullivan struck a fine point from play to put Carraig two ahead entering the closing stages. Some outstanding defending from Timmy Geaney, Martin Hickey and substitute Paul Geaney prevented Dungourney from creating any clear cut goalscoring chances, but with a point between the sides entering the closing stages, they struck for the equaliser from distance. Both sides then had further chances to seal a win, but it was not to be and referee Ger O'Connell sent the game to a replay on a final scoreline of Carraig 1-08 Dungourney 0-11.

Carraig overcome Sars to reach East Cork Final

East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship Semi Final
Sun 21st August 2011, Venue: Watergrasshill
Carraig na bhFear 0-17 Sarsfields 1-12

Carraig na bhFear advanced to the final of the East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship after a deserved victory over Sars in the semi final on Sunday night in Watergrasshill. The Glanmire men struck first with a point from a free but Carraig replied immediately through a well struck free from John O'Sullivan, making his first start of the championship. The game was end to end with both defences playing well and the sides traded points, with Martin Hickey striking from distance for Carraig while Paul Murphy also opened his account with a fine effort from his full forward berth.
Carraig then took control in the middle period of the half, with Aaron Dorgan striking a fine point from the right wing, before O'Sullivan converted two frees in a row to open up a three point lead after 22 minutes. But Sars were back in the game soon after when a long clearance broke to their dangerous full forward line and they made no mistake, rattling the back of the net from a tight angle under pressure. Bouyed by this, Sars added two quick points to open up a two point lead approaching the break. Carraig found their rythym again and Paul O'Keeffe knocked over a point from 45 yards to cut the gap to a point. On the stroke of half time, midfielder Aidan Hegarty got the score of the half when he burst out of a group of players on his own 45 with the ball, soloed at pace up the wing and scored an inspirational point from 50 yards to send the sides into the break level.
Carraig started the second half in determined form, with the full forward line causing plenty problems for their direct opponents. An early point from another O'Sullivan free was followed by a point from play from Con Burns. The sides traded points again, with Aidan Hegarty and Paul Murphy both on target for Carraig. The defence was playing some great hurling, lead by Martin Hickey and Richard Mullins who cleared ball after ball. A Sars point from a free reduced the gap to a point mid way through the half, before Carraig stretched the lead with successive points from Burns, another O'Sullivan free and a second point for Dorgan. Sars continued to press and two points from frees either side of a point for O'Sullivan after some great forward pressure, meant the gap was down to a goal with just over five minutes to play.
Sars pressed forward in search of the goal they needed, but the Carraig defence kept them away from the danger area and limited them to a point before Paul O'Keeffe, who had a strong second half, added his second point of the game to keep the lead at three points as full time approached. A point from Sars made for some nervous moments for the Carraig supporters in injury time, but the defence held firm and Carraig emerged the victors by two points at full time, Carraig 0-17 Sars 1-12.

We now move on to face Dungourney in the East Cork Junior A Hurling Final, on Sat 10th September. It will be just our third appearance in a Junior A Final, our last one coming memorably in 2008, when we defeated Killeagh, while we have to go all the way back to 1966 for our first final appearance against Carrigtwohill.
This should be another exciting occasion for the club and the team and their management will leave no stone unturned as they attempt to bring the Jamsie Kelleher trophy back to Carraig for just the second time.

Carraig come back to earn semi final spot

East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship
Quarter Final Replay
Sat 13th August - Castlelyons

Carraig na bhFear 1-11 Lisgoold 0-12

At the second time of asking, Carraigs Junior A Hurlers progressed to the East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship semi final with a hard fought but deserved two point win over Lisgoold. It was Lisgoold who started the better, with an early brace of points from John Cashman and one from the accurate free taking of Maurice O'Connell. Carraig were struggling to break free from the Lisgoold defence and it was 9 minutes before Brian Hegarty opened the scoring from a free for Carraig, after a number of near misses. Lisgoold pointed another free before Carraig broke through for the games only goal on 13 minutes. Con Burns made great progress from the left wing and when his effort dropped dangerously around the Lisgoold square, Aaron Dorgan was on hand to double to the net to level the game.
Lisgoold, aided by a stiff breeze, continued to pile the pressure on the Carraig defence, with their puckouts regularly landing on top of our full back line. But the defence helf up well and prevented what seemed like two certain goals with goal line clearances from Tomás Sheehan and Richard Mullins on seperate occasions. Lisgoold added two points from frees before Brian Hegarty had Carraigs second point after 20 minutes. The sides swapped scores again, with Aaron Dorgan notching Carraigs first point from play before full forward Paul Murphy found his range. Lisgoold had the final score of the half from another free as Carraig trailed 1-04 to 0-09 at the interval.

The second half started well for Carraig but despite creating good scoring chances, we were failing to convert these and it was Lisgoold who opened the scoring with two points, one from a free, to open up a four point lead. Carraig refused to panic and worked their way back into the game. The influential Con Burns had Carraigs first point, before Murphy chipped in with his second of the night. Martin Hickey, now operating at midfield, was now dominating the game and he landed a huge point from the left wing to reduce the gap to a single point midway through the half.
The defence was now well on top, Dee O'Driscoll and Richard Mullins dominating the centre, Daniel Coleman was excellent at corner back while Paul Geaney produced an excellent display in his first championship start. After some great pressure from the forwards, Con Burns found time and space to level the scores and substitute Aidan Hegarty followed this up with a fine point from the sideline to put Carraig into the lead for the first time with under 10 minutes remaining. Lisgoold replied with a point but Carraig continued to press and it was that Burns again who struck for the lead. Carraig again missed some very scoreable chances but it was left to substitute John O'Sullivan to have the final word when he pointed a free from a tight angle to leave Carraig two points in front on full time, 1-11 to 0-12.

Carraig fight back late to earn replay

East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship
Quarter Final 30th July 2011
Venue: Castlelyons
Carraig na bhFear 1-14 Lisgoold 0-17

Carraigs  and Lisgoold will both feel they could have progressed to the semi final of the East Cork Junior A Championship after this tightly contested game, which saw the lead change hands on a number of occasions, ended in a draw. Con Burns landed an equalizing point deep into injury time when it looked as if the game was slipping from Carraigs grasp. It was Lisgoold who started brightly, two early points from frees put them on the scoreboard before Carraig opened their account with a well taken score from midfielder Noel Mullins. Full forward Paul Murphy followed this up with a fine point from the left wing shortly afterwards and the sides were level. Lisgoold struck their first point from play to take the lead again but Carraig came into the game around the middle of the field and the half forward line of Con Burns, Aaron Dorgan and Paul O'Keeffe also got on top. A Brian Hegarty free and a point Burns put Carraig in front for the first time mid way through the half.
The sides were level again shortly afterwards and Lisgoold took the lead again with two further points, one from a free to go two points ahead. Carraig continued to work hard and were rewarded with a point from a Martin Hickey 65. Corner forward Ronan Spillane was fouled close to goal and Hegarty duly dispatched the resulting free to level the scoring again. Spillane was then on target with an expertly struck sideline cut to put Carraig back into the lead. Approaching the break, a high ball in from Martin Hickey dropped at the edge of the square and Paul Murphy doubled in the air to find the corner of the net. Carraig added another point from Aaron Dorgan on the right wing to go into the half time break leading 1-08 to 0-06 having played with the aid of the breeze.

On the resumption Carraig started well, with early points from a Brian Hegarty free and an Aaron Dorgan point after some great pressure from the forwards on the Lisgoold defence. Lisgoold replied with two points on the bounce and the sides exchanged points again, with Martin Hickey and Aaron Dorgan on target either side of two Lisgoold points. as the game entered the final quarter, a Brian Hegarty free put Carraig 1-13 to 0-11 in front, but Lisgoold began to dominate around the middle of the field and put the Carraig defence under pressure. A point from play was followed by two points from questionable frees, and it was game on with the margin down to two points heading down the home stretch. Daniel Coleman and Martin Hickey were outstanding in defence for Carraig, while goalkeeper Conor Hegarty dealt well with some dangerous balls dropped into his area. Carraig struggled to get time and space up front and scoring chances were hard to come by. A point from a 65 reduced the margin to one, before a long range point levelled the scoring on the stroke of full time. From the puckout, Lisgoold gained possession and struck for the lead.
But Carraig kept battling and pushed on for the equaliser which they needed to keep their season alive. After a series of clearances from either end, with time running out, substitute Shane Horgan won a difficult ball on the 65 and after a sequence of passes around the middle, Cian Dorgans well placed pass found Con Burns in space on the right wing. Burns Shot hit the upright high and dropped over the bar for the equalizing point. Referee Michael Mulry blew the full time whistle shortly afterwards and the sides will have to do it all again. Final score after a pulsating game, Carraig 1-14 Lisgoold 0-17

Hurlers on top against Killeagh in league

29/06/2011
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 2
Venue: Carraig na bhFear
Carraig na bhFear 2-14 Killeagh 2-08

Carraigs Junior B hurlers produced their best display of the year in their fifth outing in Division 2 of the East Cork Junior Hurling league when they defeated Killeagh in Carraig. The sides swapped points early on, with Pádraig Dunne and Pádraig O'Sullivan both on target for Carraig. Carraig took the lead for the first time when corner forward Matthew Browne used his strength to great effect before finding the back of the Killeagh net to put Carraig 1-02 to 0-02 ahead. Points from a Tom Neally free, a second for O'Sullivan and a first from centre forward Aidan Sheehan extended Carraigs lead. Killeagh responded to the Carraig rally with two points of their own. Carraig extended the lead when Pádraig Dunne broke through and cleverly batted the ball to the net for a second goal midway through the half. Killeagh hit back however, with a point quickly followed by a goal, to narrow the margin. The hard work of the Carraig forward line was paying dividends and two Pádraig O'Sullivan points from frees rewarded this effort, before the same player had his fourth point approaching the break. Tom Neally was hurling well at centre back, while Nicky Pike and Tyrone Kennedy worked tirelessly at midfield. Carraig looked to be heading to the break with a six point lead, but Killeagh scored a well taken second goal to leave the half time score Carraig 2-08 Killeagh 2-05.

The second half started with Killeagh pointing a free to reduce the margin to just two points. Carraig introduced substitute John O'Sullivan shortly after the resumption and the same player was on target to extend the lead. His younger brother Pádraig was causing the Killeagh defence plenty problems and two further points from him left Carraig five ahead midway through the half. A second point for Tom Neally, again from a long range free, increased the lead to six, as the Carraig half back line and midfield dominated throughout the second half. Cathal Horgan was strong at full back, with young players Keith Lomasney and John Mullins playing well beside him. Killeagh added two late points, either side of two points for Carraig from a Pádraig O'Sullivan free and a fine effort from play from Matthew Browne, to leave the final score reading Carraig 2-14 Killeagh 2-08.

An important win for this team as they prepare for their upcoming championship match and plenty to ponder for the Junior A selectors too no doubt, as they look ahead to the next round.

Carraig defeat Midleton in first round
  27/06/2010
East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship 1st Round
Sun 26th June,Venue - Watergrasshill

Carraig na bhFear 0-17 Midleton 2-08

Carraig na bhFear advanced to the quarter final of the East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship with a three point win over a strong Midleton team on Sunday night in sunny Watergrasshill. Caraig started the brighter of the two teams, with a number of early chances being created through the hard work of the half forward line. Brian Hegarty opened the scoring from a free before a well hit ground stroke from Paul Murphy flew over the crossbar to put Carraig two clear. Midleton tried hard to break through the Carraig defence, with Cork senior panelist Conor Lehane a threat throughout, but he was well marshalled by Timmy Geaney, who was superb all through for Carraig. With Martin Hickey, and the Mullins brothers, Richard and Noel also hurling well, Carraig extended the lead with further points from a Hegarty free, before wing forwards Con Burns and Paul O'Keeffe scored two points in quick succession to make it 0-05 to 0-0 after 15 minutes. Midleton opened their account with a point from Lehane but Carraig struck back with a long range effort from Geaney, followed by a second of the night for Burns. Midleton responded with another point and were back in the game when goalkeeper Conor Hegartys clearance was blocked into the back of the Carraig net with 20 minutes gone to reduce the margin to two points. The goal failed to disrupt Carraigs dominance though and further points from Burns, Paul Murphy and corner forward Ronan Spillane left Carraig 0-10 to 1-02 in front at the break.
The second half started with the sides swapping points, Paul Murphy on target for Carraig, before Midleton got on top and had their best spell of dominance, knocking over four points in a row to reduce the margin to the minimum. Carraig responded by bringing Martin Hickey to midfield and introducing substitutes Colm O'Reilly and Aaron Dorgan. A point from a Brian Hegarty free, followed by a point for Noel Mullins, pushed Carraig three in front again. Midleton cut the margin to two and as the sides entered the final quarter there was little to seperate them. A monster free from Martin Hickey, struck from his own 45, found the target, before Hegarty added another from close range. Aaron Dorgan was causing the Midleton defence problems with his pace and movement and he found the target from close range to extend the lead, before Paul Murphy added another point to extend the lead to 6 with just over five minutes remaining.
But there was still life in the Midleton challenge and a well taken goal from Lehane reduced the margin to three with a few minutes remaining as the Magpies piled on the pressure. The Carraig defence cleared their lines well, but further scoring chances went abegging at the other end. A late 21 yard free for Midleton was well struck to the back of the net, only to be ruled out for a square ball infringement, much to the relief of the Carraig support. When referee James Hennessy blew the full time whistle, it was Carraig who advances on a 0-17 to 2-08 scoreline.
This was a good win for the team but the players and their management will be aware that there is plenty to work on before the next round against Lisgoold, which promises to be an even tougher encounter.

Carraig bounce back with win over Churchtown
  09/06/2011
Avondhu/Imokilly Junior Hurling League Section 2
Round 7
Venue: Churchtown
Carraig na bhFear 0-23 Churchtown 1-09

After a disappointing performance the previous week against Lisgoold, Carraig bounced back with a solid performance to see off the challenge of Churchtown at the picturesque north Cork venue on Wednesday 8th June. Carraig won the toss and played with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half. Early points from Paul O'Keeffe, Brian Hegarty from placed balls and in particular some lovely points from team captain Paul Murphy, put Carraig in control. Churchtown were finding the Carraig defence difficult to break down, with wing backs Martin Hickey and Paul Geaney both well on top. Hickeys long range free taking was a feature of the first half as he picked off some huge points with the aid of the wind. Con Burns and CIan Dorgan kept the ballmoving at midfield and the Carraig forwards looked dangerous throughout. Churchtown scored three points from frees but at the break Carraig lead 0-12 to 0-03.
The homeside came flying out of the traps at the start of the second half and an early half chance was well finished beyond Conor Hegarty to the corner of the Carraig net at the end of a move which started when the Churchtown goalkeeper made a good save from Ronan Spillane. A point from a free shortly afterwards reduced the margin to five points. But Carraig stuck to their task and the driving runs of Paul O'Keeffe and Aaron Dorgan caused the home side plenty problems. Shane Horgan was dominating at centre forward and Martin Hickey was dominating in the half back line, his huge clearances pinning the home side back. Points from two Hegarty frees, O'Keeffe and a massive point from the left sideline from Ronan Spillane extended the lead. Churchtown continued to pick off points from frees but each one was met with a reply from Carraig. A late 21 yard free was stopped and cleared by the Carraig defence and further points from Murphy, O'Keeffe and Hegarty helped Carraig take the points on offer on a scoreline of 0-23 to 1-09.

Carraig hold on for win against Dungourney
  28/05/2011
Avondhu/Imokilly Junior Hurling League Division One Section Two
Venue: Dungourney
Dungourney 0-14 Carraig na bhFear 0-16

Carraig made it four wins from five games in the Junior A hurling league with a hard earned win over Dungourney on Friday 27th May in Dungourney. Dungourney opened the scoring through an early free but Carraig responded well with points from Aaron Dorgan, Paul O'Keeffe and Paul Murphy early on pushing Carraig in front. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze, Carraig were sharper onto the breaks and the good work of Nicky Pike and Cian Dorgan at midfield gave the forwards plenty of chances to work scoring opportunities. Conor Hegartys puckouts were long and accurate, Dee O'Driscoll was dominating at full back, while the half forward line working well and causing problems throughout. Cian Dorgan was on target for Carraig with four points throughout the first half, one from a free as Carraig extended the lead to 0-09 to 0-02 with 20 minutes played, with further points from Brian and Aidan Hegarty. Noel Mullins was unlucky to see a great goal chance strike the upright and with the keeper stranded, the ball rebounded out past a clutch of players and Dungourney cleared to safety. Dungourney added a further point from a free, before a long range effort from Tomás Sheehan saw Carraig go into the break with a 0-12 to 0-03 lead.
On the resumption, Dungourney began to make full use of the wind advantage and reduced the margin to six points within five minutes of the resumption. As the home side mounted the pressure, Carraigs captain Paul Murphy struck for a fine point from the right wing to open Carraigs account for the second half. Dungourney continued to press, but with the half back line of Timmy Geaney, Richard Mullins and Martin Hickey impressing, Carraig continued to withstand the pressure. The home side reduced the margin however and another point from Aaron Dorgan kept Carraig three in front with ten minutes remaining, as both sides emptied the bench in search of the win. With Dungourney now winning the majority of the breaks, only some timely blocks and a high work rate kept Carraig in front. Dungourney pointed two frees to leave just the minimum between the sides in the closing stages, before Carraig added the final score after a lung bursting run from Hickey, who broke down the right wing to slot a fine effort. Carraig continued to defend resolutely, and held on for a narrow win.
Next up, Carraig will face Lisgoold, with further games against Shanballymore and Churchtown to come, in what is proving to be an extremely competitive competition.

Carraig win in Midleton
  20/04/2011

Avondhu/Imokilly Junior Hurling League Division One
Section 2
Venue: Midleton
Midleton 1-08 Carraig na bhFear 0-12

Carraig na bhFear took the points on offer in their second outing in the Avondhu/Imokilly Junior A Hurling league with Midleton in Clonmult Memorial Park on April 20th, in perfect conditions for hurling. The sides exchanged points early on, with Paul Murphy on target twice for Carraig either side of two points for Midleton. Cian Dorgan added a free for Carraig but Midleton added their third point shortly afterwards to keep it close. Carraig lost Con Burns and Colm O'Reilly to injury, but subs Tom Neally and Richard Mullins made telling impacts and Carraig began to take control. Points from John O'Sullivan, a Martin Hickey '65 and another free from the accurate Cian Dorgan, pushed Carraig three points in front before Midleton replied with a point from a free. Despite a number of wides from all areas of the field, Carraig pushed ahead as wing back Hickey added a point from distance before Noel Mullins was on target from the left corner. Ronan Spillane, excellent under the high ball throughout, added antoher point before the break to leave Carraig 0-09 to 0-04 in front.
Midleton started the second half the sharper team and three early points, two from frees, narrowed the margin. The Carraig goal lead a charmed life at times, Midleton hit the post and Gavin Webb made some excellent saves in the Carraig net. Carraig were guilty of hitting a number of wides again throughout the half. Ronan Spillane won a ball on the right wing and found the target from the touchline to extend the lead, before substitute Aaron Dorgan used his pace to great effect to make it 0-11 to 0-07. With five minutes remaining, Midleton won a 21 yard free and the ball was sent to the back of the net to leave just a point between the sides. Carraig pressed on however and a late free was pointed by Cian Dorgan before Midleton replied with a late point from play. Carraig finished the game with 14 men, as having already introduced the full compliment of substitutes, Paul Murphy was injured in a collision and could not continue. Inspite of this, Carraig battled hard and held on to win by a single point on a 0-12 to 1-08 scoreline.

Junior B Hurlers qualify for league final
  16/08/2010

East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 3 Section 1
Venue: Carraig na bhFear

Carraig na bhFear 2-13 Fr. O'Neills 2-05

After the disappointing loss to Youghal in the Championship the previous Friday, Carraigs Junior B hurlers bounced back to qualify for the league final with a good win over Fr. O'Neills in Carraig on Monday night. This was a winner takes all clash, both sides entered the game on full points from their games to date and the prize for the winners was a place in the final against Erins Own.
Carraig started well with Padraig O'Sullivan and Jamie Fouhy lively in attack. An early sideline from an extremely narrow angle from O'Sullivan opened the scoring. Shortly afterwards, O'Sullivans persistance presented him with a goal after a mix up in the O'Neills defence while Cian Dorgan was unerring from frees. At the other end Ollie Murphy and Tom Neally were dominant through the centre of defence as O'Neills struggled to find time and space in front of goal. Well taken points from Aaron Dorgan and Aidan Sheehan extended the lead to 1-07 to 0-04 at the break.
On the resumption Carraig continued to press and were 1-10 to 0-04 ahead after 35 minutes. Then a long range effort from Aaron Dorgan deceived everyone in the square to find its way to the net to extend the lead even further. Fr.O'Neills fought back however with two goals of their own in the next ten minutes as they threatened to pull off a huge comeback. With the scores 2-10 to 2-04, Carraig drove forward again and points from Aidan Bowen, Aidan Sheehan and Aaron Dorgan extended the lead again. O'Neills threw everything at Carraig in the closing stages but great defending from Nicky Pike, Paul Geaney and William Spillane kept them at bay. So the team now advance to the final which has not yet been fixed but will hopefully be scheduled in the near future while the good conditions for hurling remain.

Junior B hurlers lose to Youghal
  13/08/2010
East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship
Third Round
Venue: Ballynoe

Youghal 2-13 Carraig na bhFear 0-10

Carraig exited the East Cork Junior B Championship at the hands of a stronger Youghal team on Friday 13th August in Ballynoe. Youghal started brightly and raced into a four point lead inside the opening five minutes. The Carraig defence was coming under alot of pressure in the early stages but John Walsh, Tom Neally and Ollie Murphy were all hurling well. Youghals defence were well on top however and Carraigs young forwards found possession and scores hard to come by, with Aaron Dorgan getting Carraig on the board from placed balls, while centre forward Tony Dunne also found the range from play.
A goal for the seasiders midway through the half opened up a seven point margin and they threatened to run riot. It took some good saves from Brian Sheehan in goal to keep Carraig in the game but a second Youghal goal came before the break to leave the half time score line Carraig 0-04 Youghal 2-10 and a mountain to climb.
In the second half Carraig never let up and continued to press for a way back into the game. Padraig O'Sullivan and Aaron Dorgan were excellent in the second half, with Stephen Casey and William Spillane also showing well. Early points were swapped as Aaron pointed further frees in response to a Youghal brace of points. Carraig could have had a goal when Padraig O'Sullivans long sideline into the square was batted back across the goal brilliantly by Padraig Dunne only to bounce just the wrong side of the upright. O'Sullivan scored an excellent point from another sideline and the same player made a great run through the heart of the Youghal defence only to see a fine shot well saved by the keeper to deny Carraig a certain goal. Further points for Carraig late on reduced the margin but Youghal ran out comfortable nine point winners in the end to advance to the quarter final.

Dungourney advance as Carraig bow out
East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship
Third Round

Sat 24th July - Watergrasshill
Carraig na bhFear 1-12 Dungourney 3-14

Goals win games and that was certainly the case in this East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship clash as Dungourney rattled the net at crucial times to earn a deserved victory over a Carraig side that pushed them to the limit for the full game.
Carraig got off to a great start, an early Paul Murphy free was followed by a well taken goal by John O'Sullivan, who first timed the ball under the advancing keeper. A second point for Murphy from a free pushed Carraig five in front after five minutes before the Duns opened their account with a point from play. Almost immediately from the puckout, Cian Dorgan won a great ball and finished well to keep Carraigs noses in front, but the Dungourney men were coming back into the game. A goal in the eight minute by their full forward, who caught, turned and kicked to the net, opened the game up again. Carraigs defence was beginning to see alot more ball as the play became more frantic around the middle of the field. Nicky Pike struck for a fine point for Carraig as the sides traded points. Shane Horgan also got on the board to leave the score 1-05 to 1-04 midway through the half to Carraig. From here to the interval though, Carraigs shooting let them down and seven first half wides tells part of the story. Dungourney were more clinical and picked off four unanswered points off limited possession to take a two point lead to the short whistle, with it all to play for as Dungourney lead 1-07 to 1-05 at the break.
The second half saw the sides trade four early points. Half time substitute made an immediate and impressive impact with a great point on the run, with Dorgan also on target again for Carraig. As in the first half, Dungourney got an early goal, with their full forward winning high ball again before setting up his corner forward for a first time shot that gave Conor Hegarty no chance in goal. Another point followed and suddenly Carraig found themselves six points in arrears, albeit it with plenty time remaining. Carraig fought back, Timmy Geaney, Shane Horgan and O'Keeffe all took the game to Dungourney while sub Brian Hegarty won alot of possession in midfield. A free from Murphy was cancelled out by one for Dungourney but Carraig began to make inroads into the lead there after. Con Burns found the target before a great run and point from wing back Aidan Hegarty reduced the margin. Dungourney replied again with a point from an excellent sideline cut, before Carraigs best forward O'Keeffe scored two super points to eat further into the lead.
With ten minutes remaining just a goal separated the sides with Dungourney leading by 2-12 to 1-12 and it was all still to play for. Carraigs defence withstood multiple attacks but again, chances were missed in front of goal to reduce the lead further. Then, with five minutes remaining, Dungourney struck for their third and most important goal of the night. A sideline into the danger area was not dealt with and the ball found its way to a Dungourney man who pulled to the net. Carraig continued to press in search of the scores that would bring them back into the game, but Dungourney countered with two late points against an isolated defence to seal the win.
A disappointing loss and an end to an all too short championship campaign for the club. Despite the absence of a number of key players through travel and injuries, the squad had put in a tremendous effort under the stewardship of Mick, Dan Joe, Tony and Denis, but it was not to be and on the night, Dungourney were deserving winners. Well done to all the players on their efforts and keep the heads up, beidh lá eile againn.

Defeat for Junior B's in first round
East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship 1st Round
Friday, 16th July
Venue: Lisgoold

Aghada 3-15 Carraig na bhFear 1-13

A sluggish start from Carraig ended up proving to be the difference between these two sides in an entertaining Junior B Hurling Championship in Lisgoold on Friday night last. After the rain of recent days it was great to see the weather hold and a dry sod lead to a high scoring match with Aghada deserving of their win. Aghada got off to a blistering start. An early free was pointed by their lively corner forward. this was followed up almost immediately with a goal which Brian Sheehan in goal could do little to stop as the Carraig rearguard was left exposed. Aghada added another point before Brian Hegarty opened Carraigs account with a free after five minutes to stem the tide.
Aghada were creating all the early chances, as Carraig conceded a number of frees, two of which were converted for points. There were signs that Carraig were coming into the game however, as Cian Dorgan caught a puck out and took off on a mazy run before finishing for a great point. This was followed by another Carraig point from corner forward Bertie Sheehan. Carraig received another set back however when a long ball in deceived Brian in goal, who was not helped by a low Sun shining straight down the field, for Aghadas second goal after 15 minutes. Two further points in the 16th and 17th minutes extended the lead to 2-06 to 0-03 as Carraig struggled to recover. Some hard work from the forwards got Carraig back into the game it seemed, when Ollie Murphy kicked home a goal after some great play down the right wing.
Game on again it seemed, the sides exchanged points, Aaron Dorgan with a great point from the left wing, before Aghada picked off two more points from frees. Cian Dorgan added his second point of the half but Aghada remained in control and added three points from play before the interval, with Aidan Hegarty replying for Carraig to leave nine between the sides at the break, 2-12 to 1-06.
A half time reshuffle saw Carraig emerge a more balanced team, with improved performances all round and particularly in defence, where Paul Geaney, John Walsh and Stephen Casey were to shine in the second half. Aaron Dorgan scored his second point of the night, but Aghada picked off one in reply. Points from the more prominent Paul O'Keffe and Brian Hegarty reduced the gap, before Aghada struck for their third goal on 40 minutes to put the game out of reach. Carraig never gave up and tried hard to find that elusive goal to bring them back into the match, but strong defending from Aghada denied our forwards on a number of occasions. Four points from Paul O'Keeffe, Brian Hegarty and Cian Dorgan were all that Carraig could obtain from their dominance in this half and it was Aghada who rounded off the scoring with a late point.

A disappointing loss for Carraig, who now face Bride Rovers in the backdoor in a few weeks time. If the slow start of this match can be cut out, then there is no reason why the team cannot improve and progress beyond the next round.

The Junior B Hurlers continued their recent good form with a win over Killeagh in Carraig on Tuesday 29th June. Carraig dominated this game from the off. The defence settled well with the half back line of Tom Neally, William Spillane and Noel Mullins clearing their lines well, while Paul Geaney was prominent at corner back. The midfield pairing of Cian Dorgan and Brian Hegarty dominated and chipped in with some well taken scores. Eamon Bowen, Darren Noonan, and Aaron Dorgan were prominent up front. Despite leading well, Carraig missed a number of scoring chances in the opening half but this improved somewhat in the second half.  Darren Noonan and Cian Dorgan scored the goals on the night, with the evergreen Aidan O'Reilly getting on the scoresheet in the second half after being introduced as a substitute.

Carraig defeat Killeagh in Championship opener
East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship
First Round
Sun 27th June - Castlelyons

Carraig na bhFear 0-15 Killeagh 0-09

Carraig advanced to the third round of the East Cork Junior A hurling Championship with a deserved 6 point win over Killeagh in Castlelyons on Sunday last. An early free from Con Burns got Carraig off the mark but a series of wides followed, five in the space of five minutes, as Carraig struggled to convert possession into scores. Killeagh replied with a free of their own to tie things up on eight minutes, before Carraig began to find their range. Ronan Spillane, Nicky Pike and Con Burns added a point each to push Carraig three points in front. Full forward John O'Sullivan created the games first goal chance shortly afterwards when he cut in from the left but his shot was saved by the alert Killeagh keeper. Killeagh responded with a long range point but the dangerous Paul Murphy was on target for Carraig in response. Killeagh withdrew a forward to their defence to stem the Carraig attacks and from this point onwards both defences were on top, clearing their lines on a number of occasions.
Killeagh pointed a free but Murphy was on target again for Carraig after some good work by Shane Horgan and Tyrone Kennedy on the wing. Killeagh then pointed a 65 to close the gap again with less than ten minutes to go to half time. The scoring dried up from here to the break. Ronan Spillane created a great chance for himself and was unlucky to see his shot deflected over the crossbar by the Killeagh goalkeeper. Just before the break, both sides were reduced to 14 when Referee Brian Murphy took a hard line on a scuffle that broke out near the sideline, with Aidan Sheehan being the Carraig player to see red as the teams retired Carraig 0-07 Killeagh 0-04 at the interval.

The second half saw a continuation of the same pattern from the end of the first half. Carraig continued to dominate possession but this was not being reflected on the scoreboard. Killeagh opened the scoring with a point from a free, Paul Murphy added to Carraigs account with a pointed free from a tight angle and the same player scored a point from play shortly afterwards. Murphy pointed his second free of the day, again from an acute angle to extend Carraigs lead to 0-10 to 0-05. Con Burns made a great run through the heart of the Killeagh defence before pointing to push Carraig six points in front before Killeagh had their second point of the half from a free. Burns and Murphy replied again for Carraig but it was Killeagh who dominated from the 20th to 25th minutes of the half, firing over three points in succession to reduce the gap to four points. As Killeagh went in search of a goal, the Carraig defence withstood the onslaught and turned the ball over on numerous occassions. Timmy Geaney drove forward to score a point and Con Burns added another late point to seal the win on a scoreline of 0-15 to 0-09.
A good win but the team and their management will be aware that much more will be required in the next round, which is due to take place on the weekend of the 18th July.

High scoring Carraig defeat Sars
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division One
Round 5
09/06/2010
Carraig na bhFear 3-20 Sarsfields 1-15

Carraig bounced back from two successive defeats in division one of the East Cork Junior A hurling league to record a deserved win over Sars in Carraig on Wednesday 9th June. The game started at a very fast pace and it was Sars who were first on the board with two early points. Carraig settled well however and with the defence getting on top, pulled themselves back into the match via the accuracy of Paul Murphy. Murphy hit three points from play in quick succession as the Sars defence struggled to contain him. A point from a free made it three points each after the opening ten minutes. Good work by Ronan Spillane, Cian Dorgan and Nicky Pike earned Carraig frees in dangerous positions and Murphy converted these to extend the lead. Dorgan, Murphy and Spillane were all on target for Carraig and then a dangerous Aidan Sheehan sideline was flicked to the net by the alert John O'Sullivan to extend Carraigs lead to 1-09 to 0-04 after 20 minutes.
Sars worked their way back into the game with four points while Murphy responded with another free for Carraig. Carraig finished the half well, Nicky Pike chased a ball into the right corner and his pass was straight into the path of Shane Horgan who rushed forward and finished low to the net to extend Carraigs lead again. Centre forward Darren Noonan found the target with a well taken point but Sars replied with two points of their own to leave the half time score Carraig 2-11 Sars 0-10.
Carraig got a great start to the second half when Aidan Sheehan opened up the defence and dispatched the sliothar to the back of the net with an expert kick. Sars replied again with a point before Ronan Spillane and Murphy added further points for Carraig.Substitute Tom Neally made an immediate impact with a fine point from distance before the sides traded points from frees. Timmy Geaney was dominant at centre back, ably assisted by Tyrone Kennedy and Diarmuid O'Driscoll on the wings,as Carraig continued to work hard around the field.Sars  did not lie down however, with less than ten minutes to go, a quick free resulted in a goal which was followed by another point from play, but Carraig finished strong, with points from Brian Sheehan, Aidan Sheehan and Shane Horgan rounding off the scoring to give Carraig the win. Late scores swing it for Erins Own
  29/05/2010

East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 1
Round 3 - Caherlag
Erins Own 1-14 Carraig na bhFear 1-13

An injury hit Carraig na bhFear outfit can consider themselves very unfortunate not to have come away with at least a share of the spoils from a tough and entertaining league encounter against Erins Own on Saturday night. Aided by a strong wind, Carraig got off to a terrific start, with Con Burns racing through the home defence before finishing expertly to the back of the net for a goal. Erins Own replied with a point but the hard work and effort of the Carraig forwards was paying dividends as Burns landed two further points from play after some fine play from the full forward line trio of Daniel Foley, Paul Murphy and Aidan Sheehan. The sides swapped points, Paul Murphy getting his first of the game for Carraig. Burns was on target again shortly afterwards but Erins Own responded with two points to reduce the margin.
Carraig were defending well, Diarmuid O'Driscoll leading from centre back, ably assisted by Tyrone kennedy and Timmy Geaney on the wings. Paul Murphy was on target again, while Erins Own replied with a point from a free. Carraig then went on a scoring blitz in the closing ten minutes of the half. Six points, all from play, as the full forward line made great use of possession. Aidan Sheehan started the streak, Daniel Foley added a fine point, Shane Horgan landed a huge point from 80 yards, a brace from Paul Murphy and another from Sheehan in the left corner stretched the lead. Carraig suffered a blow when Con Burns had to leave the field with an injury but Michael Geaney was proving a handful on his introduction. Erins Own replied with two points before the interval to cut the margin as they turned to play with the breeze with Carraig leading 1-11 to 0-07..
Erins Own used the wind to their advantage in the second half, launching balls into the Carraig defence. Points from a free, a 65 and two from play closed the gap before Paul Murphy found the target for Carraig. Carraig lost Michael Geaney to a leg injury early in the half as he joined the now lengthy injury list, as Jason Noonan was moved into the forward line in his place. Carraig were still on top, with the defence closing down and blocking at every chance as Erins Own pressed hard. Darren Noonan and Cian Dorgan were gettting early ball into the forward line but Carraig spurned some good scoring opportunities as Erins Own continued to close the margin with a point from play. They then added a goal, when a questionable 65 awarded found its way through a crowd of bodies past Ronan Spillane in the Carraig goal, who could not be faulted. Spurred on by this, the home side added two points to take the lead for the first time with five minutes remaining. Carraig piled on the pressure, Paul Murphy cut the margin to a point but despite some good chances, the equaliser would not come and Carraig lost out by the narrowest of margins. Despite this, the team put in a great performance which bodes well for the months ahead, with all of our scores coming from play and with plenty to work on in the coming weeks.

Carraig and Dungourney share the spoils in league encounter
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 1
Round 2
Venue: Carraig na bhFear
Tues, 25th May

Carraig na bhFear 1-12 Dungourney 1-12

Carraig resumed their Junior hurling league campaign with a hard fought draw against Dungourney on a bright, sunny Tuesday evening in Carraig. Carraig started well, Paul Murphy in particular was causing the Dungourney defence problems and he drew two early frees which Con Burns duly converted. Dungourney settled and replied with two points of their own. Some great pressure from the Carraig full forward line resulted in another set of frees for Carraig which Burns again sent over to put us two points in front 0-04 to 0-02 after 10 minutes. A fortunate goal for Dungourney put them into the lead for the first time and they began to take a hold on the game with series of six unanswered points, five from play, as Carraig struggled to match their workrate at times. Carraig also had a series of wides in that middle period of the half as scoreable chances went abegging. Carraig did respond however, as Shane Horgan and Tom Neally got on top in midfield in the closing stages of the half while Diarmuid O'Driscoll and Timmy Geaney cleared well in defence. Con Burns was on target again, this time from play and he followed that up with two more points approaching the break to leave just four points in it.
On the resumption Carraig stepped up a gear and another early free was converted by Burns. The Carraig forwards were now hassling the Dungourney men at every opportunity, blocking clearances and denying them the space afforded in the opening half. The half was a low scoring affair however, Paul Murphy scored a fine point from the left wing after 5 minutes, but another 10 minutes had gone by before a great pass found Shane Horgan in front of goal. He rounded two men before picking his spot in the left corner past the keeper for a goal. This put Carraig back in the lead but Dungourney responded almost immediately with their first point of the half. Young Cian Dorgan caught a great puckout and finished well from the right wing but again Dungourney levelled with a point from a free. The Carraig defence were working hard and when Diarmuid O'Driscoll was fouled coming out with the ball 30 yards from goal, up stepped goalkeeper Conor Hegarty to loft a huge shot over the bar at the other end to put us back into the lead. If that wasn't enough, he repeated the trick a few minutes later from the right wing after some good defending by Tyrone Kennedy and Martin Hickey. Carraig held a two point lead going into the closing stages but Dungourney fought back and despite some good defending, Carraig conceded two late frees which were both scored as referee Pat O'Driscoll called time with the scores level at 1-12 a piece.

Carraig take points in Junior B opener
  21/05/2010

East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 3
Venue: Carraig na bhFear
Carraig na bhFear 1-15 Cobh 1-09

The Junior B hurlers got their season under way with a well earned win over Cobh on Friday,21st May. The game was played in fantastic conditions and despite some early signs of rust, Carraig improved as the game wore on to run. Cobh were the sharper of the two teams from the start, rifling over some early points but Carraig kept in touch with points from Aidan Sheehan. Ollie Murphy and Jason Noonan were hurling well while Nicky Pike covered the entire field from his midfield berth. A goal from a 21 yard free pushed Cobh back into the lead, but Carraig replied when Michael Geaneys free was saved but the rebound fell to Aidan Sheehan who finished to the net. At Half time, the scores were level, Carraig 1-05 Cobh 1-05.
On the resumption Carraig took a firm grip on the game, with Cian Dorgan and Michael Geaney leading the way with two early points. The advantage could have been more but the Cobh keeper pulled off a great save to deny Geaney what seemed a certain goal. Tom neally and William Spillane continued to hurl well in defence with Eamon Bowen making some good saves in goal aswell. Carraig kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout the half, with Daniel Foley dangerous in attack throughout, to run out winners on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-09.

Junior A hurlers get underway with a win in Lisgoold
  09/04/2010
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 1
1st Round
Lisgoold 0-12 Carraig na bhFear 1-15

The Junior A Hurlers had their first match of the season when they travelled to Lisgoold on Friday, 9th April. Carraig settled well and Con Burns was on target with a fine point to open the scoring, with the home side replying soon after with a free. Both sides were showing signs of early season rust but Carraig found gaps in the Lisgoold defence to head into a 1-04 to 0-01 lead after 15 minutes. Aidan Sheehan was on hand to pull the ball to the Lisgoold net from a Paul Murphy pass, before  the in form Burns had two more points from distance. Aidan added his second point soon after before Lisgoold worked their way back into the game, aided by the concession of a number of needless frees by Carraig. Shane Horgan and Tom Neally were hurling well in midfield, while John Walsh showed some great skill at wing back. Paul Murphy was on the scoreboard for Carraig while Lisgoold added another brace of points to close the margin. Carraig then went on another scoring burst, a Con Burns point and two from Brian Hegarty, including one from a free, adding to the tally. The home side had the final point of the half, leaving the scoreline 1-10 to 0-06 at the break.
Lisgoold upped the ante in the second half and added an early point from a free. Con Burns replied with two points for Carraig, one from a 65, before we entered a lull and Lisgoold came into the ascendency. Colm O'Reilly was in top form at full back and the back line as a unit stood up to Lisgoold test. The home side added four points in succession, as Carraig continued to concede frees in scoreable areas. Brian Hegarty and the hardworking Nicky Pike were on target for Carraig, before another Lisgoold point reduced the margin to five points. Carraig finished strong again, adding a well taken point in the closing stages to seal a six point win, 1-15 to 0-12. A good start to the season and plenty to work on for the team, who defended well on the night and at times played some excellent hurling.

Carraig edged out in thrilling final
On a mild and shower free afternoon in Castlelyons, Carraig and Midleton played part to a hugely entertaining and very competitive final, with no shortage of surprises during the course of the game. After leading for the majority of the game, Carraig were unlucky to finish on the wrong side of a 2-15 to 4-06 scoreline.

Carraig got out of the blocks at a lightening pace and after some tough early exchanges where both sides got to know eachother, Gavin Webb gave Carraig the first score of the game from a pointed free. Not long afterwards, Tony Dunne flicked on the next ball that came into the full forward line into the path of Darren Noonan, who clinically whipped on the loose ball and dispatched it to the back of the net. Carraig were now four points to the good.
Midleton struggled to get themselves on the scoreboard, but before ten minutes had past, they got their first point from play. Midleton now began to find their feet and soon added another two points from frees, leaving just one point between the sides. Midleton then delivered a long free into the Carraig square, and with no-one able to get a bat to the ball, it hopped and ended in the back of the Carraig net, giving Midleton the advantage for the first time in the game.

Nicky Pike and Darren Noonan were working hard around the field, covering a lot of ground and making sure the ball kept moving into the forward line at every possible chance. Carraig won a free in their own half back line, from this Kieran Daly expertly delivered a deep ball into the Midleton defence and Michael Geaney gathered possession and drilled a beautiful shot to the corner of the Midleton net. This was soon followed by another pointed free from Gavin Webb. In the meantime it was becoming obvious that Nicky Pike was now carrying an injury, and unfortunately had to be substituted, with Eamon Bowen coming on and John Vaughan moving to midfield.
Midleton once more came back into the game, with three consecutive points, one from a free. The Midleton half forward line were proving to be very dangerous, and had the Carraig defence working hard to cancel out any threats. Gavin Webb once more ended the siege with a pointed free, only for Midleton to respond in kind. But Carraig had the final say of the first half, once more Kieran Daly delivered a long ball into the forwards and again found Michael Geaney, who after rising highest, turned quickly and smashed an accurate shot through the Midleton defence and to the net, from outside the 20 yard line. The small whistle was blown soon afterwards, leaving a halftime scoreline of 3-03 to 1-07.

The restart saw Eamon Bowen going to the edge of the square and Tony Dunne moving to the 40. Again this half started with some whole hearted tackling and the Carraig fullback line of Richard Mullins, Ollie Mullins and John Walsh becoming more dominant. Following these exchanges Carraig worked the ball up the field to Tony Dunne, only for him to be fouled on the forty. Up stepped Gavin Webb who from the resulting free hit a low hard free, and to great shouts of joy from the Carraig supporters, saw it dip under the Midleton crossbar and through the keeper’s fingers to give Carraig a five point lead.
Midleton did not give up and responded with a pointed free from ninety yards to raise their spirits, which was soon followed by a pointed free and a point from play, leaving two in it. Jason Noonan was introduced for William Spillane, and not too long after Bertie Sheehan replaced Daniel Foley. As was originally thought, the game was turning out to be a very close encounter. The Carraig halfback line of Tom Neally, Stephen Casey and Kieran Daly were gathering up a lot of ball and keeping it moving forward. From a good Carraig clearance Eamon Bowen raced to meet and collect the ball, turning quickly only to be fouled, Gavin Webb duly converted the resulting free. Not much later, Tony Dunne picked up the loose ball and sent over a great score from the left wing, giving Carraig a four point advantage with just over ten minutes to go. Once more Midleton rallied back and after a late tackle in the Carraig square, Midleton won a penalty, only to be expertly saved by Brian Sheehan and turned around the post for a 65. Midleton converted the 65 and followed it with three unanswered points to leave the game all square with a few minutes remaining.

With the Carraig team now producing some heroic defending, the management team decided to send on Cian Dorgan for Gavin Webb. This substitution made an immediate impact with Cian Dorgan winning an upfield clearance, breaking free and sending over a superb point from the 40. With only a minute remaining, Carraig conceded a free about thirty yards out from the Carraig goal, with the Midleton free taker having a 100% record thus far, he somehow managed to mishit the resulting free. With a touch of luck, the ball managed to find its way to a Midleton forward, who from a very acute angle, finished to the roof of the Carraig net, sending Carraig hearts crashing. From the following puck out, Midleton won a free around the half way line, the free came back of the upright and a Midleton forward was first to the break, extending the Midleton advantage to three points.
With the next puck out the game was blown up and it was all over.

Great praise must go the whole hearted performance of the Carraig players and also to the management team of Aidan O Reilly, Michael Sherlock and Noel Walsh, who put in great work throughout the year to get the team so close to another East Cork championship victory.

Junior B's defeat Dungourney in semi final
  05/09/2009

East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship Semi Final
Venue: Rostellan
Carraig na bhFear 3-14 Dungourney 2-10

Carraig's Junior B hurlers great season continues as they swept aside a strong Dungourney challenge in the Championship semi final in Rostellan on Saturday last. The early exchanges were hard fought and Dungourney opened the scoring with a free, which was cancelled out shortly afterwards by a point from play by William Spillane for Carraig. Carraig suffered an early blow with the concession of a goal and a point in a matter of minutes, giving Dungourney a four point lead. The Carraig lads began to settle however, Nicky Pike and Dareen Noonan were flying in midfield and the scores began to flow. Gavin Webb picked off two fine points from the left corner, Daniel Foley added one from the right corner after a great catch and wing forward John Vaughan also hit the target to level the game after 15 minutes. Dungourney responded with a well taken effort from their wing back who split the posts from 70 yards, before Nicky Pike lofted a point over the bar from distance to level it up again. Dungourney got their noses in front again from a free, but the game swung in Carraigs direction with the arrival of a goal on twenty minutes. A long ball in was broken down by Tony Dunne, where Gavin Webb was on hand to strike. His first effort was saved by the keeper, but it rebounded straight to Webb who volleyed home making no mistake. Another free from Dungourney was cancelled out by another well taken free from Webb. Webb added another point shortly afterwards to extend the lead to three approaching the break. Carraig were hurling well all over the field at this point, Tom Neally and Stephen Casey were on top in the half back line, Michael Geaney was winning some hard ball at centre forward and Noonan and Pike continued to rule at midfield. Approaching the break, Carraigs second goal arrived. William Spillane showed a great turn of pace to take on two men, and his handpass to Tony Dunne on the 20 yard line was inch perfect. Dunne made no mistake, rattling the net giving the keeper no chance and providing Carraig with a real boost going into the break as they lead 2-08 to 1-05.
The second half saw Carraig continue to create some good chances, but against a difficult breeze the wides tally increased somewhat. Dungourney were more efficient in the early exchanges, scoring two points to reduce the gap before Webb replied with a free for Carraig. Dungourney added two further points from frees of their own however, to reduce the gap to three, with plenty of time remaining. Ollie Murphy, John Walsh and Noel Mullins were playing well in the full back line and succeeded in limiting the Dungourney forwards chances for the remainder of the game, while the half back line trio of Kieran Daly, Stephen Casey and Tom Neally continued to get the ball up field quickly. Darren Noonan whipped over a point off his left from 45 yards to push Carraig four clear again, while Webb continued to torment the Dungourney defence, taking a clever pass from Dunne and popping it over from the left touchline. Two more frees from Webb after great work by Daniel Foley and Michael Geaney followed. Geaney, now operating at the edge of the square, did well to win possession and point from 20 yards under pressure to extend the lead with five minutes to go. It was all or nothing for Dungourney at this stage and with three minutes remaining, they bagged a second goal after a scramble in the goalmouth, to reduce the gap to five. This was followed by a point from play as Carraigs defence came under a late seige. Despite Dungourneys best efforts, the backs were not found wanting, clearing their lines well. The final word went to super sub Eamon Bowen however. A long clearance from defence found its way to Bowen, who turned and drove past his man on the wing, and finished the ball to the net clinically from 13 yards to seal the win in the dying moments.
Another great win for the Junior B's, who continue to improve with each outing. Next up is the final against either Midleton or Sarsfields, who face each other next weekend.

Junior B's defeat Carrigtwohill
  07/08/2009
East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship
Quarter Final
Venue: Cobh
Carraig na bhFear 0-12 Carrigtwohill 2-03

A fine hours hurling in Cobh on Friday night last saw Carraig na bhFear advance to the semi final of the East Cork Junior B Championship with three points to spare over Carrigtwohill. Having been knocked out of the Junior A Championship 6 days previously, this was a welcome boost to the club and the players gave 110% throughout. While the side was boosted by the return of key players Stephen Casey, Nicky Pike and Ollie Murphy, this was offset by the absence of Eamonn Bowen and Bertie Sheehan in the full forward line, as Carraig fielded a new line up from the first round win over Lisgoold.
Carraig started the livelier of the two sides but after a few wasted early chances, we found ourselves a goal behind when a long ball in was knocked down and the Carrigtwohill corner forward wasted no time in doubling the ball to the net for the opening score on five minutes. The team responded immediately however, William Spillane making a great run through the defence to pick off the opening point, Nicky Pike following up with a long range effort from the 65 yard line. The forward line was now winning alot of ball and two more points from the stick of Gavin Webb put Carraig into the lead mid way through the half. Nicky Pike, Stephen Casey and Darren Noonan continued to dominate in the middle of the field, and with the defence on top, Carraig stretched the lead approaching half time, a point from a 65 and another from a free, both scored by Webb to leave the score Carraig 0-06 Carrigtwohill 1-00 at the interval.
Carrigtwohill had the better start to the second half, an early point from a free closing the gap. William Spillane made another great run through the Carrigtwohill defence, beating three men before getting the ball to Webb, who turned and split the posts from the right hand side of the field. We then conceded a second goal, a powerful finish to the net which gave Noel Finneran little chance. Another point from a 65 left us trailing by the minimum with ten minutes of the half gone gone. Some great defending by Ollie Murphy and Kieran Daly kept Carrigtwohill at bay, while the forwards began to find their rythym again. Another point from a free for Webb was followed up with a well taken point from Darren Noonan to edge us back into the lead again. It was anybodys game at this stage and the sides exchanged points again, Carraigs coming from another Webb free. Carrigtwohill could find no way past Ollie Murphy in the Carraig defence, as time after time he cleared the line, while fresh legs were making an impact at the other end in the form of Barrie Casey and Daniel Foley. Another free from the accurate hurley of Gavin Webb pushed us two in front with two minutes remaining. More heroic defending kept us in front, before Daniel Foley had the final word with a lovely point from the right wing on the stroke of full time.
Full time score Carraig 0-12 Carrigtwohill 2-03.

Carraig go down to last minute point
  03/08/2009

East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship
Venue: Carrigtwohill
Dungourney 1-08 Carraig na bhFear 2-04

Carraigs defence of the East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship was ended by a last minute point as Dungourney progressed to a quarter final meeting with Sarsfield's on a rain soaked night in Carrigtwohill. Conditions were unfavourable for hurling, with constant rain and a strong crossfield wind making handling and striking difficult. Dungourney were first to score, an early free converted and they followed this up with a point from play to put them two points to the good. Carraig began to get good quality ball into the full forward line, as the half back line got on top. A number of good scoring chances were spurned before Ronan Spillane collected the ball expertly 25 yards from goal, broke two challenges and crashed a powerful shot to the net for Carraigs opening score on ten minutes. Dungourney responded with two pointed frees, as both sides fought for every ball around the middle of the field. Bernard Murphy and Colm O'Reilly lead the charge for Carraig, putting in great displays. Aidan Hegartys incisive runs caused havoc all evening and he scored Carraigs first point to level the scores on twenty minutes. Following this Carraig took the lead again, as Paul Murphys shot from the right wing deceived everyone and skimmed off the surface into the net for the second goal of the game. Dungourney replied with a goal of their own, the ball breaking to the full forward who dispatched a well placed kick to the net from 13 yards. Another point from a free left Dungourney a point ahead at the short whistle.
The second half saw weather conditions deteriorate further and both sides pressed hard to get the few crucial scores that would make the difference. The sides traded scores early on, Ronan Spillane for Carraig, but neither side could forge many clear cut chances. Again, Carraig drew level, Aidan Hegarty with his second point of the night. Dungourney went ahead again midway through the half, but Martin Hickey hit a huge free over the bar to level the match again. With time running out, Carraig were guilty of a few wides and missed chances, Bernard Murphy was unlucky to see what looked like a certain point pulled down from above the bar by the Dungourney keeper and cleared to safety. A draw looked on the cards, but with the game deep into injury time, a quickly taken sideline saw the ball returned to the Dungourney corner forward, who split the posts to put them back into the lead. There was time for little more and Carraig were out. The team cannot be faulted for effort, as each player gave their all but it was not to be on the night.

Carraig overcome Watergrasshill in back door clash
  14/07/2009
East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship 2nd round
Venue: Rathcormac
Referee: Brian Murphy, Carrigtwohill.
Carraig 4-24 Watergrasshill 0-10

Having been defeated in the first round, Carraig na bhFear got their Junior Hurling season back on track with a good win over Watergrasshill's second string in Rathcormac on Tuesday 14th July. While weather conditions weren't the best in the lead up to the game, the pitch was in fantastic condition for hurling and credit must go to the Bride Rovers club for this. The early exchanges were even as both sides fought hard. Watergrasshill came at the Carraig defence with every opportunity. The hill toook the lead with a long range effort but Carraig replied immeditately with a free from Con Burns. Carraigs forward line caused our opponents trouble every time they ran at them, Paul Murphy and Brian Hegarty in particular, and the result was a series of frees that Burns pointed to put us 0-03 to 0-01 in front.
Carraig were guilty of giving away needless frees however and these were punished by Watergrasshill each time. Paul Murphy put us 0-04 to 0-02 up before Watergrasshill hit the next three points, two from frees and one from play, to give them a slender lead mid way through the half. Wing back Timmy Geaney equalised for Carraig after some great work by the half forward line. Carraig were beginning to get on top when the Hill hit two more points from distance, the first from a free to leave them two to the good approaching 20 minutes played. Carraigs forward line worked hard and Paul Murphy had his second point of the night before the first goal arrived for Carraig. A block down in the Watergrasshill square saw a combination of Carraig forwards get the ball to Aidan Sheehan, who turned and struck to the net from close range. Boosted by the goal, Carraig pushed on, Martin Hickey scored a long range free and Paul Murphy added another point to his tally shortly afterwards. Yet more hard work by the Carraig forwards saw us bag a second goal three minutes before the interval. This time, Brian Hegarty was onto the break and he burst through the defence to finish high to the net to give us a half time lead of 2-08 to 0-07.
Carraig started the second half the way they left the first half. Straight from the throw in, Aidan Hegarty won the ball in the half forward line and his run took him 30 yards through the defence for an excellent point. Watergrasshill scored a point from a free but they were finding it increasingly difficult to get past Carraigs half back trio of Martin Hickey, Colm O'Reilly and Timmy Geaney. Carraig dominated the half, picking off the next six points. Martin Hickey pointed another long range free, Brian Hegarty, Con Burns, from a free, Shane Horgan, Aidan Sheehan and Paul Murphy all pointed to extend the lead to 2-15 to 0-08. Watergrasshill pointed to break the cycle, but Carraig were in no mood to let up. Burns, Murphy and Aidan Hegarty all found the target in quick succession before Aidan Sheehan grabbed his second goal from close range. A Martin Hickey free, again from distance, was followed by another goal, as Aidan Sheehan became the hatrick hero, doubling a high ball to the net. Carraig introduced fresh legs to the action, and Paul O'Keeffe got his name on the scoresheet shortly after his introduction. Brian Hegarty then added to his tally and Timmy Geaney ventured forward again to grab his second point. Watergrasshill were awarded a 21 yard free which Colm O'Reilly deflected over the bar, before O'Keeffe and Hickey rounded off the scoring with two late points from play. Final Score Carraig 4-24 Watergrasshill 0-10.

Carraig fall to Sars in Round One
  26/06/2009
East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship 1st Round
Venue: Caherlag
Carraig na bhFear 1-11 Sarsfields 2-17

Carraig were comprehensively beaten in the first round of the Junior A Hurling championship by a razor sharp Sarsfields outfit that lead from start to finish at a well prepared Caherlag on friday night last. A slow start was to prove extremely costly for Carraig, as Sars ability to create space in the middle of the field paid dividends and we found ourselves six points in arrears after only nine minutes. Two long range pointed frees from Craig Leahy, combined with four from play, left us chasing the game from the off. Carraig responded with three points in succession however. Shane Horgan, who had a fine hour at centre forward, scored Carraigs opening point, debutant Paul O'Keeffe finished well from the right corner shortly afterwards before Aidan Hegarty had reduced the margin to three points on 15 minutes with his opening point after a good run. Crucially though, Sars were able to pick off points from distance, aided by some excellent fielding in their half back line, and two more points saw the gap stretch to five again after 20 minutes. Bernard Murphy found the range for Carraig, before Sars had points either side of Hegartys second score of the night. Carraigs defence was under alot of pressure, with wave after wave of attack being sent in, but Timmy Geaney played a captains role and lead the resistance . Martin Hickey, who hurled well throughout, scored a huge point from a long range free coming up to half time, as we trailed by five at the interval, 0-11 to 0-06.
Carraig needed a strong start to the second half, and despite some early pressure, we failed to add anything to the scoreboard. Sars picked off an early point before the games crucial score arrived in the sixth minute of the half as Sars got in for a goal that put them nine points to the good. Champions die hard though and Carraig never gave up. Colm O'Reilly, now operating further out field and playing well, pointed from the right wing, Bernard Murphy had his second of the night and substitute Paul Murphy also chipped in with a well struck point in response to Sars second point of the half. The defence was still being worked hard though, Daniel Coleman, Cathal Horgan, Tomás Sheehan and Dee O'Driscoll clearing alot of ball in the middle period of the half. Sars finished the game as a contest however when they got through for their second goal on 49 minutes. Carraig kept plugging away, Shane Horgan bursting through to kick a goal a minute later, as the forwards tried hard to break through a tough Sars defence. Colm O'Reilly scored a free in the closing minutes, as Sars rounded off the match with the final two points to run out winners on scoreline of 2-17 to 1-11. A disappointing start to the Championship for Carraig, but Sars were fully deserving of their win on the night. The squad are aware there is alot of work to be done and they will be hoping to put in a much improved display in next weeks back door.

A's in control against Bride Rovers
  09/06/2009

East Cork Junior Hurling  League Division 1
Carraig na bhFear 1-21 Bride Rovers 1-04

Carraigs Junior A hurlers bounced back from a disappointing defeat to Killeagh in their previous outing by recording a comprehensive win over Bride Rovers in this division one league tie in Carraig on Tuesday 9th June.
Carraig were on top from the start, early points from a Colm O'Reilly free, John O'Sullivan, Shane Horgan and a sideline special from Aidan Sheehan pushed the hosts into an early lead that they were not to relinquish. Wing forward Nicky Pike added a fifth point for Carraig before Bride Rovers got on the board with a long range free, punishing some sloppiness in Carraigs play. Martin Hickey was dominant at centre back, while Timmy Geaney and Diarmuid O'Driscoll along side him let nothing past, as Carraig pressed on and added to their lead. Bernard Murphy scored two fine points from centre forward, and good work by both corner forwards, John O'Sullivan and Brian Hegarty, won frees which Colm O'Reilly duly converted to leave the scores 0-09 to 0-01 after 25 minutes of play. The Rovers scored two points from frees either side of another O'Reilly free as half time approached, to leave the interval scoreline 0-10 to 0-03 in Carraigs favour.
The second half saw Carraig extend their lead, Brian Hegarty finishing a fine move with a close range point, before a lifeline came for the visitors. A free from 35 yards deceived the defence and rebounded down off the crossbar over the line for a goal. The reprieve was shortlived however, as Carraig reacted well and scored 1-06 without reply in the next 15 minutes. Bride Rovers were reduced to 14 men during this spell and Carraig used the extra man to their advantage. Two pointed frees from O'Reilly were followed by a well taken goal from Bernard Murphy, before O'Reilly, O'Sullivan, Murphy and Hickey hit four on the trot during that spell. The Rovers broke the run with their only point from play with 10 minutes remaining, before Carraig closed out the game with another point from the lively Brian Hegarty and three more frees from O'Reilly to leave the final score Carraig 1-21 Bride Rovers 1-04.

Carraig come out on top against Castlemartyr
  29/05/2009
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 1
Venue: Castlemartyr
Carraig na bhFear 2-17 Castlemartyr 0-08

A strong second half performance saw Carraig na bhFear run out winners against Castlemartyr on Friday night last, in a match played in perfect weather conditions in Castlemartyr. Castlemartyr opened the scoring with an early free before Aidan Sheehan had Carraigs first point of the night. The sides exchanged further points, with Martin Hickey splitting the posts with a 65 for Carraig. Con Burns and Aidan Hegarty were playing well and on top at midfield, while the half backline of Hickey, Timmy Geaney and Diarmuid O'Driscoll were all hurling well. Castlemartyr took the lead for the third time, but Aidan Sheehan had Carraig level on the quarter hour with another fine point from the left wing. Paul Murphy put Carraig into the lead on 20 minutes after some wayward shooting saw a few goal chances and point opportunities go abegging. The sides were level for the fourth time before a quick double of points from Aidan Hegarty and Gavin Webb saw Carraig take a 0-06 to 0-04 lead into the break.
The second half saw Carraig get off to the perfect start. Upping the performance all over the field, the team bagged 2-04 inside the first ten minutes of the half. Two points from Brian and Aidan Hegarty got the ball rolling, before Paul Murphy caught a perfect sideline cut from Aidan Sheehan and buried the ball to the back of the net for the first crucial goal. Three minutes later, Full Forward Mick Geaney was rewarded with a second major, beating the full back and finishing from close range to put Carraig firmly in control. A Con Burns free extended the lead. Castlemartyr responded with two points from play either side of a fine point from Burns, and midway through the half, Martin Hickey and Burns were on target again. Carraig closed out the game well, with good performances from Cathal Horgan, Bernard Murphy, John O'Sullivan and Timmy Geaney. The home side notched two further points but Carraig pickied off another five, two frees from Hickey, another Aidan Hegarty special, Brian Hegarty from a free and one from substitute Nicky Pike.
A good performance by Carraig, and with a number of players returning from exams and injury, the competition for places at the moment bodes well for the Championship, which gets under way in just over four weeks time.

Junior B's come out on top in close game
  22/05/2009
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 3
Carraig na bhFear 4-12 Castlelyons 2-15

Carraigs Junior B hurlers travelled to Castlelyons on Friday night last and after an open and entertaining hours hurling, emerged on the right side of a 4-12 to 2-15 scoreline.
Carraig got of to a good start with 2 early points from a Gavin Webb free and Nicky Pike from play. The hosts responded in kind with two points from play, before two points from Nicky Pike either side of a Castlelyons point left us a point to the good after 15 minutes, Carraig got a timely boost when a long ball into the full forward line was scrambled to the back of the net. Gavin Webb was unerring with his free taking and he extended that lead to six points with two more points. A sloppy clearance lead to a goal for Castlelyons before Webb scored an excellent point from play on the left wing. Castlelyons pressed on and had the next three points of the half to close the gap, with Carraig hitting a number of scoreable chances wide of the posts. Carraig added a further point from the hard working Cian Dorgan to leave the half time score Carraig 1-08 Castlelyons 1-06.
The second half saw Castlelyons level after five minutes as they scored two points. Carraig were playing well however and the sides swapped points again with Aidan Sheehan getting one for Carraig. Carraig were awarded a free on the 21 yard line and Micheal Geaney stepped up to power the ball to the roof of the net for a crucial goal. Castlelyons responded with another point, before Nicky Pike had his fourth point of the game. Two pointed frees kept Castlelyons well in the game, before Gavin Webb pointed another free. The sides swapped points, with Aidan Sheehan on target again, but Castlelyons closed the margin to a point with less than 10 minutes remaining. Carraig pressed forward and after some good work by full forward Tony Dunne, Michael Geany was on hand to score his second goal of the half. In an exciting finish though, Castlelyons fought back and scored 1-01 in the space of two minutes as the game approached full time to level the sides again. With a draw looking likely, Carraig responded and when the ball broke to Aidan Sheehan close to goal, he fired the winning goal into the back of the net. Castlelyons tried hard to reply but the Carraig defended well in the final stages to see out the game.

Carraig grind out a draw against Erins Own
  06/05/2009
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 1
Erins Own 1-09 Carraig na bhFear 0-12

A late late point from Con Burns saw a depleted Carraig outfit take a share of the spoils with Erins Own in the Junior A Hurling league on Bank Holiday Monday in Caherlag. Without the service of a number of players through exam commitments and injuries, the team showed a number of positional changes from previous matches. Erins Own opened the scoring with an early free on two minutes, quickly followed by a Bernard Murphy equaliser. The sides exchanged scores in the opening quarter, with Paul Murphy and Michael Geaney on the score sheet for Carraig, before Bernard Murphy finished a good team move to put Carraig into the lead for the first time. Erins Own were testing the Carraig defence with some long balls into their full forward line, but Daniel Coleman, Richard Mullins and Cathal Horgan were well up to the task. The Erins Own pressure paid off though, two points, one from a 65, put them back into the lead. Aidan Hegarty levelled things up with a lovely effort from 45 yards, before Ronan Spillane converted a close range free after he himself was fouled on his way to goal. Once again the hosts equalised, and in the closing stages of the half, two points from play from Spillane were matched by two from Erins Own, to leave the half time score Carraig 0-08 Erins Own 0-08.
The second half was a low scoring affair with both defences well on top. Timmy Geaney and John Walsh were prominent for Carraig, but our forwards were finding space hard to come by and a number of good chances went abegging. The first score of the half came after 7 minutes when a 21 yard free for Erins Own was expertly finished to the net to give them a three point lead. Carraig responded well and slowly chipped away at this lead. Bernard Murphy scored his third point of the evening, before Paul Murphy had his second point to reduce the margin to one. Some misplaced passes n=meant more scoring chances weren't taken, and the hosts extended their lead again when they scored a free from 30 yards, with 8 minutes remaining. Carraig piled on the pressure but could not find a way through. With two minutes remaining, Spillane scored from a free and Carraig kept up the pressure in search of an equaliser. It came in the dying moments of the game, Con Burns, operating at midfield, intercepted a clearance and from 80 yards, his shot into the wind dropped just over the crossbar to tie the game. It was no less than Carraig deserved. Final score Carraig 0-012 Erins Own 0-09.

Carraig work hard to overcome Rusell Rovers
  26/04/2009
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 1
Carraig na bhFear 0-14 Russell Rovers 0-10

Carraig overcame a strong Russell Rovers challenge to pick up their second win of the league on Sunday 26th April. With heavy rainfall in the days leading up to the game, conditions were far from perfect but the pitch held up well. Carraig opened the scoring through Aidan Sheehan who struck the ball over from a tight angle on the left wing after 5 minutes. Russell Rovers responded with a point almost immediately and Con Burns was on hand to put Carraig back in front shortly afterwards from 30 yards out. It was very much point for point in the opening stages, with space at a premium as both sides hassled and harried all over the field. A free for Russell Rovers was converted before Paul Murphy collected a great pass and scored despite the attentions of a number of defenders to put Carraig 0-03 to 0-02 in front mid way through the half. Another pointed free put Russell Rovers back on terms before they took the lead with a point from play. Carraig responded well and picked off the next two points via Murphy and Sheehan again. Russell Rovers again levelled with five minutes to go in the half, but Murphy picked off his third point of the half to nudge Carraig back into the lead. The last score of the half came for Russell Rovers and at the short whistle nothing seperated the sides, Carraig 0-06 Russell Rovers 0-06.
Carraig made two changes at the interval, introducing Shane Horgan and Michael Geaney. A few positional switches were also made and with the defence tightening up, this lead to an improved second half showing from the home side. Rovers took the lead with a pointed free, before Colm O'Reilly replied with a free of his own from 45 yards out to level the sides yet again. Russell Rovers then hit the front again, a point from play and a one from a free putting them 0-09 to 0-07 in front with 10 minutes in the half gone.  Carraig moved Martin Hickey to centre back at this point and with Aidan Hegarty getting on top at midfield, the game began to wing in Carraigs favour. Colm O'Reilly closed the gap from a free, before Michael Geaney had a goal disallowed due to a square infringement. More fine work by Aidan Sheehan and Aidan Hegarty lead to a beautiful point from wing back Timmy Geaney from the left sideline to level the sides once more. Dee O'Driscoll won a free which Hickey converted from distance to put us back into the lead. Colm O'Reilly then had his first point from play from the right corner, which was followed by another long range Hickey free after great play by the Carraig half forward line. Rovers tried hard to get back into the game but the defence as a unit worked hard, lead by Stephen Casey and Timmy Geaney. The hard working Brian Hegarty got in on the act to push Carraig into a four point lead, before another foul was punished by O'Reilly again from a close range free with three minutes remaining. Russell Rovers had the final score of the game from a free on the left wing and from the puckout, referee John Buckley blew the final whistle to signal a Carraig win.

B's take the points in first game
  23/04/2009

The Junior B hurlers, boosted by a large turnout, overcame Bride Rovers in the first round of the East Cork Junior Hurling league division 3 on Wednesday night last. Rovers took the early lead, punishing some sloppy frees conceded in the middle of the field, but Carraig gained a foothold in the game with 2 early goals. Points from Michael Geaney and Sheehan extended the lead. The Rovers used the strong wind well and added a few points from play, before a third goal, via an Aidan Sheehan free, pushed Carraig further in front. But a late burst from the Rovers prior to half time saw them score 1-02 without reply to leave the half time socre Carraig 3-03 Bride Rovers 1-08.
The second half saw Carraig put in a much better performance. Points from Gavin Webb, Michael Geaney and Sheehan pushed Carraig further ahead as Bride Rovers struggled to get the ball past the Carraig defence.  John Vaughan, Michael Foley and Eamon Bowen were in great form for Carraig in defence, Darren Noonan and Nicky Pike controlled midfield while William Spillane, Bertie Sheehan and Tony Dunner were prominent in attack. A number of subs were introduced during the course of the half and acquited themselves well. Some late points extended our lead to seven points before Bride Rovers had the final score of the evening as darkness set in, to leave the final score line Carraig 3-09 Bride Rovers 1-09.

Junior A Hurlers off to a good start
  14/04/2009
East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 1
Venue: Dungourney

Dungourney 0-12 Carraig na bhFear 0-15

Carraig got their Junior A hurling campaign off to a good start on Easter Monday with a three point win over the home side in a tough and close hours action. The match was played in excellent conditions and although both sides displayed some rustiness, there was a good pace to the game. Carraig opened the scoring early on through a point from Paul Murphy, followed shortly afterwards by a well taken effort from Michael Geaney on the left wing. As the hosts began to find their feet they picked off two points to tie the match, one from a free and one from play. Martin Hickey scored an excellent long range free on ten minutes to put Carraig back in front. Full Forward Colm O'Reilly added another point from a free moments later before Hickey sent over a 65 to put us 0-05 to 0-02 in front after the first quarter. Dungourney came back and picked off a point from a free but O'Reilly scored another free to keep Carraig out in front. There followed a period of dominance for Dungourney as Carraig became sloppy in defence and attack Four points, including one from a free put the hosts into the lead for the first time, but on the stroke of half time, Paul Murphy popped up with his second point of the evening to leave the sides level at the break.
The second half got underway with Dungourney picking off the opening two points inside the first five minutes, both from broken play. Ronan Spillane won a great ball for Carraig in the right corner and sent his shot straight between the posts to cut the margin to a single point again, before the Duns had a point from a free on ten minutes. Carraig were now coming to terms with the Dungourney attack and some better defending, ;ead by Timmy Geaney and Bernard Murphy, coupled with some positional switches saw Carraig storm back into the match. Aidan Hegarty scored a fine point from the left wing before Colm O'Reilly got his first point from play in the right corner. Dungourney hit another free to take the lead before O'Reilly had his second point from play to level the scores with 18 minutes gone. Substitute Brian Hegarty made his mark with a good point from play to put us into the lead but another pointed free for Dungourney kept it all square going into the closing ten minutes. Carraig got on top in this period and despite hitting a number of poor wides, the pressure paid off as Dungourney gave away a number of frees. Colm O'Reilly converted three of these in the closing stages to edge us into a lead that we would hold at the final whistle. Final Score Carraig 0-15 Dungourney 0-12
