20/04/2009 East Cork Under 13 Football Championship Final Venue: Carraig na bhFear
In a tensely fought encounter, Carraig na bhFear pulled away in the final minutes to secure a hard earned win in the U13C football East Cork Football Championship final.
The game was only a minute old when Carraig fell behind to a well taken Cloyne goal. Carraig had to fight in this period of Cloyne dominance and superb displays from Diarmuid Murphy and Gary Geany ensured that the score remained at 0-0 to 1-0. Eventually, Carraig responded with a wave of attacks but were profligate in front of goal until they found their range and a string of points from Greg Mc Donald, Daragh Cronin and Adam O’Sullivan before Ryan Galvin crashed home Carraig’s opening goal from close range.
Cloyne came back with a superb goal that rounded off a move of high quality. Carraig kept their cool, however and points from Oisin Crowley and another from Adam O’ Sullivan meant that Carraig went into the break leading by two points at 1-7 to 2-2.
Cloyne started the second half with fire in their belly and they were ahead by 3 points with ten minutes gone thanks to 4 scores without reply including two superb goals. However, anyone who watched this Carraig team’s progress this season knew of their great spirit and this was confirmed as, man by man, they stood up to the challenge and put their bodies on the line to bring home the championship.
In this period, Greg Mc Donald was imperious, running from square to square and scoring two goals of high quality. The introduction of David Sweeney and Paul Sheehan proved a masterstroke as they ran their counterparts ragged on the wings and gave a plentiful supply of ball in to the full forward line. In the full forward line, Conor O’Brien was holding the ball up well for on running forwards.
In the middle of the field, Ryan Galvin was ably assisted by Oisin Crowley who ensured that the scoreboard kept ticking over with some well taken points. The half backline of Cathal Cronin, Aaron O Donoghue and Conor Hayes performed manfully against much bigger opposition. At the back, Brendan Murphy and Michael Ahern stopped a couple of “certain goals” with great tackles, whilst Richard Murphy pulled off some wonder saves from close range.
In the final minutes, Carraig pulled off the move of the match when a flick from Ryan Galvin took out the entire Cloyne defence and Adam O’ Sullivan finished the move by burying the ball into the vback of the net. The goal was the perfect ending to a match that was watched by a large crowd and was great advert for underage football .
