Under 16's complete the double in style
East Cork Under 16 C Football Championship Final
Venue: Glenville
10th October 20009
Carraig na bhFear 5-11 Bride Rovers 0-06

The Under 16's completed a fantastic double on Saturday last when they took the East Cork C Football Championship crown in emphatic fashion in Glenville against Bride Rovers. Carraig burst out of the blocks quickly, early points from John Forde and Seán O'Sullivan edging Carraig two points to one in front, before Jamie Fouhy stole through from his midfield berth to get the first goal of the game. It was all Carraig at this stage, as Bride Rovers struggled to contain the lively attach. Fouhy added a free soon afterwards and Eoin O'Keeffe chipped in with a point from play. This was quickly followed by a well taken goal from James Meehan. Two further points approaching the interval from Alan Cahill and Seán O'Sullivan stretched the lead, but the Rovers had the final say of the half when they broke through the mean Carraig defence for a point from play on the stroke of half time. The score read Carraig 2-06 Bride Rovers 0-02 at the break.

Any hopes of a Rovers comeback were quickly quenched upon the resumption. Pádraig O'Sullivan, scoreless up to now, found his range and after putting over a lovely point, he also had the ball in the back of the net. Credit to Bride Rovers, they did not give up and added to their tally with two more points from play. Jamie Fouhy replied for Carraig with a point and Joe O'Donnell tucked away the fourth goal of the afternoon as Carraig continued to dominate. The sides exchanged further points, Alan Cahill and Jamie Fouhy scoring for Carraig, before centre back Joe Murphy got in on the scoring with another great goal for Carraig. Fittingly it was left to Jamie Fouhy to finish the scoring, after a magnificent display, as he slotted over his fourth point of the day in the closing stages to leave the scoreline Carraig 5-11 Bride Rovers 0-06.

More scenes of jubilation at the final whistle for this team, as they bounced back in great style from the bitter disappointment of their exit in the County hurling semi final only a few weeks ago. Congratulations to the team, their management and the Juvenille club as a whole on yet another great success. Keep up the hard work lads!

Carraig claim East Cork title

East Cork Under 16 C Hurling Championship Final - Replay

Venue: Castlelyons

Carraig na bhFear 2-11 Lisgoold 1-09

Scene's of great jubilation were the order of the night in Castlelyons as Carraig na bhFear claimed the East Cork Under 16 C Hurling Championship after another excellent hours play against Lisgoold on Friday night last. Given the weather in recent days, the Castlelyons club must be complimented for the condition of their pitch, which was in great condition for the match. It was Lisgoold who opened the scoring but Carraig responded well and a point from James Meehan, two frees from Pádraig O'Sullivan and a 65 from the accurate stick of Joe Murphy put Carraig into a three point lead soon after. The sides shared four further points, Alan Cahill and Pádraig O'Sullivan picking off two fine points from play, to keep Carraig three in front. Carraig received a great boost when the lively Meehan was on hand to get the first goal of the game, extending the lead approaching half time. Lisgoold have a fine side however and responded well, scoring three unanswered points approaching the interval to leave the half time score Carraig 1-06 Lisgoold 0-06.
Lisgoold resumed the second half where they left off and dominated proceedings. Carraigs lead disappeared within ten minutes of the resumption as Lisgoold fired home 1-02 to take the lead. Carraigs scoring drought was ended when Joe Murphy sent over a brilliantly struck free from 70 yards to reduce the margin to a point. Carraig heads lifted again, once more Pádraig O'Sullivan and James Meehan were shining in attack and both had points from play to level and put us into the lead respectively. The game was now in the balance with ten minutes remaining. Carraig switched Michael Murphy, who was having an outstanding game at wing back, to attack and the move paid dividends as he caused the Lisgoold defence more problems. Lisgoold equalised from play, before Carraig found a crucial second goal. John Forde's long range shot rattling the back of the net to put Carraig into a three point lead. Jamie Fouhy, who worked hard at all night in midfield alongside Forde, struck a great point off his left moments later, before Pádraig added another free, his fifth point of the night, to seal the win.
This was a great win for Carraig, who last won this trophy in 1993, the year in which alot of these players were born. The team have worked extremely hard throughout the year under the watchful eye of Jimmy Hickey and his team of selectors.  The improvement in the standard of their play is there for all to see and hopefully this team will go on to do well in the County series. Well done lads, keep it up.

Under 16's must do it all again

East Cork Under 16 C hurling Championship Final
Venue: Rathcormac
Carraig na bhFear 1-13 Lisgoold 2-10

Carraig and Lisgoold will have to do it all again after a thrilling East Cork Under 16 C Hurling Championship final in Rathcormac on Monday night, 31st August. Seven times over the course of the hour the sides were level, level at half time and fittingly, level at full time also. The sides exchanged early points, Joe Murphy sending over a 65 for Carraig, before a quick burst of four unanswered points put Carraig 0-05 to 0-01 in front, Pádraig O'Sullivan with three from frees and James Meehan with one from play. Gradually Lisgoold played their way back into the game and scored 1-03 midway through the half to take the lead, as Carraigs defence dealt admirably with the pressure. Relief came when O'Sullivan and Alan Cahill pointed from play to tie the scores up again, before another O'Sullivan free swung the lead back in Carraigs favour yet again. Lisgoold won another free and duly pointed this to leave the sides deadlocked at the interval.
The second half saw Carraig get off to a good start again, three points in a row, two from O'Sullivan and a 65 from Murphy, who was having a great game at centre back. Lisgoold came back again, replying with two points of their own before Carraig struck for the opening goal of the game. James Meehan with a great finish to the net, putting some daylight between the teams, or so it seemed. Lisgoold replied almost immediately with a major of their own, and with the pendulum swinging in their direction, added two points to take the lead from a 65 and a free. It was tit for tat from here to the end, both sides giving it everything. Carraig equalised again through Pádraig O'Sullivan, Lisgoold got their necks ahead with another well taken free but O'Sullivan saved the game for Carraig with another expertly taken free under pressure, to take the game to a replay.

A sublime performance against Middleton ensured another 2 points in the hurling league for a hardworking Carraig na bhFear team.

Carraig played the first half with a strong wind in their backs and put 2-2 on the score board before Midleton replied with a goal and a point. After this it was tit for tat, Carraig still holding onto a marginal lead at half time 3-9 to 2-7.
Carraig added an extra bit of fight to their game in the second half against the wind. Great hurling was shown by both teams, but great defence determination and using every scoring change resulted in a 6-15 v 3-15 victory

Under 16's defeat Cobh in hurling league

Under 16 Hurling league
Carraig na bhFear 2-11 Cobh 2-09

After two good league wins in two weeks against Lisgoold and Midleton, the U-16's faced into a tough match against Cobh on Monday night last. Although there had been alot of rain in the lead up to the game, the pitch was in good condition. The cold and wind didn't stop the lads putting in a passionate performance.

Cobh started strongly but it was Carraig's Padraig O'Sullivan who scored the first point. This was cancelled out by Cobh who scored a goal and a point from free. Carraig battled back scoring 2 points (O'Sullivan and O'Keeffe) but it was Cobh who looked the stronger putting 3 points over the bar. Carraig didn't give up however, some hard work and a great defensive display by Colm Cooney, Michael Murphy and anchor man Joseph Murphy at centre back ably assisted by Kieran Minehane and John Forde swung the tide in Carraigs favour. A beautifully taken 65 by Joseph Murphy and another point from Padraig O'Sullivan followed by a Cobh point left Carraig trailing by a goal (0-05 v 1-05) at half time.

Carraig started the second half by a point and a goal but Cobh showing doninance replied with 3 points and 1 goal, while our centre back Murphy pointed a long range free.
Carraig trailed 1-07 to 2-08 with 10 minutes to go. It was then that Carraig pulled deep and showed an enormous work ethic. The whole team fought for every ball with the result that the closing quarter of the match showed Carraig's supremacy as we scored 1-4 without reply. A consolation point for Cobh in the last minute made the final score Carraig na bhFear 2-11 Cobh 2-09.
A great win for Carraig well done lads keep up the good work !
