Carraig progress to East Cork Football Semi Final

East Cork Junior A Football Championship Quarter Final
Sat 17th Sept - Carrigtwohill
Carraig na bhFear 1-15 Castlemartyr 0-08

Just three days after the bitterly disappointing defeat to Dungourney in the East Cork Junior A Hurling final, Carraigs Junior A Footballers picked themselves up to take on Castlemartyr in the quarter final of the East Cork Junior A Football Championship. While there may have been some concerns among the Carraig support as to whether the team could bounce back, the response of the players put those fears to bed and the team put in a solid performance in their first game with the big ball in a number of months.
An early point from a Colm O'Reilly free was followed by a point from John O'Sullivan, before an incisive move through the middle from Martin Hickey lead to a goal from Paul Murphy to leave Carraig 1-02 to 0-0 up after ten minutes. Castlemartyr replied with two points and the sides then exchanged further scores, but Carraig came back again to finish the first half with three unanswered points from Paul O'Keeffe, Paul Murphy and John O'Sullivan to lead 1-05 to 0-05 at the break having played against the breeze.
Carraig dominated the second half, with Martin Hickey, Michael Minihane, Paul Murphy, Liam Ryan, Noel Mullins and Colm O'Reilly all adding further points as Castlemartyrs challenge faded out in the closing stages. The defence was solid throughout and the team controlled possession throughout. The final score read Carraig 1-15 Castlemartyr 0-08 and this puts the team into a semi final meeting with Glenbower Rovers on Wednesday 21st Sept in Castlelyons, with a 7:30pm start for yet another big game for the club.

Carraig win 2010 League final
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
2010 Final
Venue: Lisgoold, 28th April

Carraig na bhFear 2-09 Cloyne 1-09

Carraig na bhFear claimed the 2010 Junior Football League division one title with a three point win over County Champions Cloyne on Thursday night, 28th April in perfect conditions in Lisgoold. Carraig went into the match with injuries to a number of key players but the performances of a number of younger players will give the selectors many headaches between now and the quarter final of the championship. Carraig attacked from the off and an early point from the boot of Liam Ryan opened the scoring. Back came Cloyne to open their account with a well taken point. Cloyne followed this up with a goal after a high ball in was fisted to the back of the Carraig net, despite the best efforts of Aidan Sheehan in goal. Carraig responded in great fashion however. A Colm O'Reilly free from the right wing dropped just short but Liam Ryan was on hand to fist the ball to the net and the sides were all square. Carraig were playing with great confidence and a well worked move down the right wing saw the ball make its way to young Aaron Dorgan who cut past his man, along the end line and placed a great pass across the goal where Ryan was on hand again to finish to the back of the Cloyne net for his second major of the night.
With the Carraig defence well on top, the forwards were getting plenty of possession and the hardworking John O'Sullivan extended Carraigs lead with a close range point, before centre back Timmy Geaney drove forward to kick another point to extend the lead to 2-03 to 1-01 mid way through the half. Cloyne responded with a point from a free but Carraig came back again with two further points from Martin Hickey and Colm O'Reilly. In the closing stages of the half, the sides traded points with Cloyne getting their third point of the match after a quick break, before a Colm O'Reilly free saw Carraig take a 2-06 to 1-03 lead to the break.
Cloyne came out with all guns blazing in the second half and dominated the early proceedings in the middle third of the field. A point almost from the throw in cut the lead to five before another point from an O'Reilly free pushed Carraig six ahead again. Back came Cloyne with two further points as the Carraig defence came under increasing pressure. But lead by the excellent Daniel Coleman at full back, they kept Cloyne at bay and set up attacks for Carraig to counter as the game opened up. Two well taken points from the boot of Paul O'Keeffe pushed Carraig five clear again coming into the closing stages. Cloyne attacked in waves and despite hitting the post twice, they could not find the goal they were looking for as the Carraig defence stood strong. Cloyne picked of three points in a row as they sought to close the gap, but in the end, time ran out on them as Carraig battled to the end to emerge with the win on a scoreline of 2-09 to 1-09.
The win marked a second league title for Carraig in four years and a fourth title since the year 2000 (2000, 2003, 2008 and now 2010). Captain Shane Horgan hit all the right notes in his acceptance speech, thanking the hardworking manaagement team and congratulating Cloyne on their County success and wishing them the best of luck at Intermediate level. Carraigs focus switches to the upcoming quarter final v Castlemartyr on Sunday the 8th May.

Carraig grind out win against Cobh
East Cork Junior A Championship 1st Round
Sun 3rd April - Caherlag
Carraig na bhFear 0-11 Cobh 1-04

Carraig advanced to the draw for round three of the East Cork Junior A Football Championship with a hard fought win over Cobh in Caherlag. The early exchanges were tight, as both sides got to grips wit each other. Paul O'Keeffe opened the scoring for Carraig but Cobh were back on terms soon after through a pointed free. They took the lead soon after with a point from play and after a cagey opening ten minutes lead 0-02 to 0-01. Carraig were guilty of missing a number of good chances but got back on terms when John O'Sullivan broke through the cover and popped the ball over the bar from 20 yards. The seasiders took the lead again with a point from a 45 but Carraig were now beginning to dominate possession, with Daniel Coleman and Diarmuid O'Driscoll solid in the full back line and Timmy Geaney driving forward from midfield. His midfielder partner Martin Hickey drew Carraig level on 20 minutes with a good point after a quick move down field. With the Carraig defence on top, further chances arose for the forwards but Carraig could only muster two points from frees from the boot of Colm O'Reilly to close out the half 0-05 to 0-03 in front.
The second of half couldn't have started worse for Carraig, as straight from the throw in Cobh attacked and struck for the games only goal. Bouyed by this, they added a point straight after and lead by two points. But Carraig responded well and the defence tightened up to such an extent that this was to prove to be Cobhs last score. Carraig moved Shane Horgan to midfield and Martin Hickey to centre back and both players dominated as Carraig delivered early ball into the full forward line time and again. O'Reilly closed the gap with a free and the same player latched onto a long pass over the defence to point again and level matters up with 20 minutes to go. Cobh continued to press but Carraig withstood their attacks and countered well, with points from the boot of Paul O'Keeffe and a fisted effort from Paul Murphy opening up a two point lead with ten minutes remaining. Carraig continued to soak up the pressure and when Timmy Geaney intercepted a dangerous crossfield pass with 10 minutes to go, he started a quick attack and was on hand to finish it with a well taken point to stretch the lead to three points with five minutes remaining. With the clock running down, full forward John O'Sullivan drew a close range free which O'Reilly converted again to extend the lead to four, as Carraig finished the game attacking the Cobh goal, but hitting a number of poor wides as they looked to close out the game. When Referee Niall Barrett blew his full time whistle, Carraig had advanced on a 0-11 to 1-04 scoreline while Cobh must now take the back door. A hardworking performance from Carraig but the players and management will be aware that further improvement is necessary before we face into round three in a few weeks time.

Carraig overcome Ballinacurra
  East Cork Junior Football League
Division 1
Sun 27th March - Venue Ballinacurra
Carraig na bhFear 1-20 Ballinacurra 0-02

With the first round of the Championship quickly coming in to view, Carraig travelled to Ballinacurra on Sunday last to take on the Village in the fifth round of the league. This game however did not turn out to be the tough examination expected, as Carraig dominated procedings from the first whistle. An early point from a Paul Murphy free was followed by a point from Shane Horgan and Paul O'Keeffe, both of whom represented Carraig with Imokilly in the Senior Championship over the past few weeks. Carraigs defence was in a mean mood and this set up a strong platform for wave after wave of attack. It was Paul Murphy who did most of the damage, scoring five points in succession from play, before Horgan added his second. Murphy then added another, Con Burns pointed before Murphy added the last score of the half to leave the half time score Carraig 0-11 Ballinacurra 0-0.
Carraig picked up where they left off with another point from Murphy, before the home side broke their duck and scored the next two points. The Carraig backline was not to be breached again however as Carraig continued to dominate in possession and territory. Midfielder Martin Hickey scored a point, which was followed up by another burst of scoring by Murphy, two points, one from a free, followed by the only goal of the game, well finished after a good move. Carraig closed out the game with further points from Burns, O'Keeffe, Colm O'Reilly, Horgan and William Spillane. Another two points collected for Carraig but the team and their management will be very aware that a much tougher test will await them next week in the Championship against Cobh.

Junior A's defeat Bride Rovers
  East Cork Junior Football League
Division 1 Round 4
Venue: Rathcormac
Sat 5th March

Carraig na bhFear 0-14 Bride Rovers 1-05

Carraig got back to winning ways with a hard earned six point win over Bride Rovers in a game played on the Rathcormac pitch on Saturday last. Despite a low scoring start, Carraig got into their stride with points from Con Burns and Colm O'Reilly while Paul Murphy and Brian Twomey, were constant thorns in the Rovers defence throughout. Approaching the interval Carraig lead by 0-07 to 0-03 but Bride Rovers got through for the games only goal to leave just a point between the sides at the break.
Carraig continued to apply pressure in the second half, with Twomey and Paul O'Keeffe driving forward at every opportunity. Bride Rovers found scoring chances increasingly hard to come by and the Carraig defence succeeded in limiting them to just two second half points, while at the other end, a late run of points from the boot of Paul Murphy enabled Carraig to run out winners on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-05. Another good win for Carraig as the preparations for the first round of the championship against Cobh next month continue apace.

Erins Own take win with strong second half
  East Cork Junior Football League
Division 1
Sat 26th February - Caherlag
Erins Own 1-12 Carraig na bhFear 0-06

Carraig went down to their first defeat of the new year when they travelled to Erins Own in the Junior Football League division one. Carraig played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half but failed to capitalise on this advantage, holding only a narrow one point lead at the break. Timmy Geaney opened the scoring for Carraig, before full forward John O'Sullivan scored a fine point after some good work by Brian Twomey. Erins Own responded with their opening score and their strong running from defence caused the Carraig defence a number of problems throughout the half. Carraig regained a two point cushion through a free from Paul O'Keeffe, but a number of good chances were missed as the final pass let Carraig down on a number of occasions. Two points from the hosts levelled the scoring, as Erins Own continued to press, but a well taken point from Timmy Geaney after some fine fielding in midfield, saw Carraig take a slender lead to the break, 0-04 to 0-03.
Carraig made the early running in the second half, O'Keeffe with another well taken point, extending the lead to two again. But Erins Own then took over around the middle and picked off a number of scores, mainly through frees conceded by an overworked Carraig defence. Four points, three from frees, nudged them in front, before O'Keeffe cut the gap to one with his third of the day. Carraig could have had a goal at this point but John O'Sullivans shot came back off the inside of the post and from the rebound, Brian Twomeys shot was somehow cleared off the line to keep the hosts lead intact. Two further points extended the lead again for Erins Own. With ten minutes remaining, they were awarded a penalty which was duly converted. Carraig continued to press but were caught on the counter on a few occasions in the closing stages as Erins Own closed out the game with three further points to give them a 1-12 to 0-06 win.
A first defeat for Carraig in the league but the management and players will take plenty from the game and look to bounce back in their next outing, with the first round of the Championship just a month away.

Carraig make it two wins from two in league
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 2
Fr. O'Neills 2-01 Carraig na bhFear 3-12
Venue: Aghavine

Carraig travelled to Aghavine on Sunday morning, 20th Feb, to take on Fr. O'Neills in the East Cork Junior Football league.
The home side started brightly and hit the post with an early goal chance, before the follow up was well saved by Carraig keeper Aidan Sheehan. The hosts hit the front with a point from a free but Carraig soon found their stride and dominated the remainder of the half. Two points from Colm O'Reilly were followed by efforts from Paul Murphy, Martin Hickey and Timmy Geaney as Carraig dominated around the middle of the pitch, providing a strong platform for the forwards.
Midway through the half, a fine team move saw Jamie Fouhy beat his man and finish the ball to the bottom corner of the net to put Carraig 1-05 to 0-01 ahead. Colm O'Reilly added his third point soon after from the right wing but had to leave the field with an injury picked up in the process of scoring. Two points from John O'Sullivan and Paul Murphy extended Carraigs lead, but right on the stroke of half time, O'Neills broke through for a goal to narrow the margin.
Right from the resumption, O'Neills struck for a second goal but Carraig steadied again and dominated the half. Shane Horgan was on top at centre back, while William Spillane gave an energetic and strong display at midfield. John O'Sullivan had his second point from the full forward position, before Timmy Geaneys effort deceived the keeper in the O'Neills goal for Carraigs second goal five minutes into the half. Carraig added further points from captain, Martin Hickey and from the accurate Paul Murphy. The best move of the game saw Hickey put Timmy Geaney in on goal and he made no mistake with a low shot under the keeper for his second goal of the game. A huge point from Hickey closed out the game as the Carraig defence was solid and kept the hosts attack quiet throughout. Final score Carraig 3-12 Fr. O'Neills 2-01

Carraig take points in opening Junior League outing
  13/02/2011

East Cork Junior Football League
Division 1, Round 1
Venue - Carraig College Pitch
Carraig na bhFear 1-10 Lisgoold 2-05

On a bright and clear morning for football, Carraig picked up the points on offer in this opening clash of the 2011 Junior Football league Division one. The win owed mainly to a good first half performance from Carraig, who dominated the play for the opening 30 minutes and lead by eight points at the short whistle. Carraig settled quickly and created an early chance which was pointed by the relaible Colm O'Reilly. With Paul O'Keeffe and Martin Hickey dominant under the kickouts, Carraig were creating a number of chances but the signs of early season rust were clear as Carraigs shooting let Lisgoold off the hook on a number occassions. The pressure did pay off however, when a fine move lead to a goal for John O'Sullivan after some excellent running from Paul O'Keeffe through the heart of the defence. O'Sullivan added another point soon after and Lisgoold replied with two points from close range as they came back into the game. Carraig finished the half with five unanswered points, Colm O'Reilly with a huge kick from the right wing, O'Sullivan again, Con Burns and two from the lively Paul Murphy stretched the score to 1-07 to 0-02 at the break, with the Carraig defence in mean mood, lead by Brian Hegarty and Shane Horgan.
Lisgoold had the first point of the second half, before two Murphy points, one from a free, added to the lead. With 20 minutes to go, Lisgoold made the most of a mix up in the Carraig defence to bang in a goal and their challenge came back to life. Two further points followed in the next ten minutes while Carraig began to find scores difficult to come by as the half wore on. Then, with five minutes remaining, a penalty was awarded to the visitors, who duly converted it and the lead was back to a single point. Carraig threw everything into defence as Lisgoold came at them in waves in the closing moments, but a well worked break down the left wing saw Paul O'Keeffe upended close to goal and Paul Murphy duly dispatched the clinching point with the last kick to give Carraig a deserved two point win. All in all a good start to the year for the team, who will be upping their preparations over the coming weeks for championship action against Cobh in just over a months time.

Good start puts Dungourney in driving seat
  12/02/2011

East Cork Junior Football League
Division 2, Round 1
Venue: College Pitch, Carraig na bhFear

Carraig na bhFear 1-07 Dungourney 4-12

A disappointing start to the year for the Junior B footballers, who were well beaten by a slick and fitter Dungourney team in the College pitch on Saturday, 12th Feb. An early blitz from the visitors saw them race into a 2-04 to 0-01 lead in the opening ten minutes, a pointed free from Jamie Fouhy being Carraigs opening score. William Spillane added a second point for Carraig as the team looked to be coming to grips with the play of the Dungourney men. Then midway through the half Dungrouney added a third goal and Carraig were suddenly 3-04 to 0-02 down and facing an uphill battle. Credit to the players, they fought their way back into the game and dominated the remainder of the half, lead by the all Mullins half back line of Richard, John and Noel, with John O'Sullivan and William Spillane coming into the game at midfield. A John O'Sullivan point was quickly followed by a goal from Brian Twomey. Aidan Hegarty got a point to keep the scoreboard ticking over and Twomey added another point from a free to reduce the margin to five points at the break, 3-04 to 1-05.

The opening stages of the second half saw the sides exchange points, Aidan Hegarty and Jamie Fouhy with another free cancelling out two Dungrouney points, before the visitors extended their lead again with a dominant middle period of the half. They added 1-02 in quick succession and try as they might, Carraig just could break down the Duns defence at the other end. Three further points in the closing stages saw the visitors take the points on offer on a scoreline of 4-12 to 1-07. The B Management will take plenty of encouragement from this game, but with many other A Grade Championship teams in this league, tough tests still remain and there is plenty of work to be done on the training ground in the mean time.

Junior B's progress to Championship quarter final
  18/09/2010

East Cork Junior B Football Championship 1st Round
Venue: Rathcormac, Friday 17th Sept

Carraig na bhFear 1-11 Glenville 0-07

An excellent second half display of attacking football propelled Carraig into the quarter final of the East Cork Junior B Football Championship on Friday night last, when the team came from behind to defeat old rivals Glenville in Rathcormac. Carraig took an early lead with a point from midfielder Richard Mullins after a great run. But Glenville were looking dangerous in the early stages and had the Carraig defence under pressure at times. Two points one from a free, one from play, pushed them into the lead after ten minutes. A fine move involving Nicky Pike, Jamie Fouhy and Donal Foley saw the latter kick a splendid point to level the scores. Carraig followed this up with another point from Aidan Hegarty after a good move down the left wing involving a number of players. Jason Noonan was having a great game for Carraig at centre back, ably assisted by Noel Mullins and Noel Foley in the full back line. Glenville added further points to take a hold on the game, moving 0-06 to 0-03 in front but with half time approaching, Jamie Fouhy scored a point from a free to narrow the margin to two points and Carraig were well in touch.
On the resumption Carraig began to play with more direction and the Glenville defence came under considerable pressure. Bertie Sheehan kicked two early frees and the sides were level, before the introduction of Minor players Aaron Dorgan, John Mullins and Padraig O'Sullivan for Carraig swung the game in Carraigs favour. Dorgan and O'Sullivan caused endless problems with their pace and ability to win possession. Quick ball into the full forward line saw Sheehan on hand to kick two fine points from play as Carraig took the lead. Then, a great Aaron Dorgan pass found corner forward Brian Twomey, who turned his man inside out before planting the ball past the keeper for a crucial goal. Glenville tried to respond but were denied a goal of their own by a top class save from Pat Ahern in goal, who deflected the ball high onto the upright where it rebounded into the hands of the Carraig defence. Carraig continued to attack, Jamie Fouhy and Donal Foley leading the line, with Bertie Sheehan adding two point points from frees to extend the margin to seven points. Glenville tried hard to get back into the match, but time after time the defence stood strong, with Jason Noonan and Tom Neally on form. When the full time whistle went, Carraig had progressed to meet St.Catherines in the next round on a 1-11 to 0-07 scoreline.
All in all this was an excellent performance by the team who went into the game as underdogs, with the Junior A team having used over 20 players in their campaign. But with players to return for the next round, the management team of Willie Sheehan, Ollie Murphy and Eddie Hegarty will be sure to try and build on this outing the next day. Well done to all.

Carraig through to Championship semi final
East Cork Junior A Football Championship Quarter Final
09/05/2010
Venue: Lisgoold
Carraig na bhFear 0-11 Glenbower Rovers 0-06

Carraig produced a strong second half performance to advance to the East Cork Junior A Football Championship semi final, defeating Glenbower Rovers by five points in Lisgoold on Sunday 9th May. Carraig flew out of the blocks and with the first four chances, had four points on the board. Paul Murphy opened the scoring from with a point from the left side of the goal on  the end line, with Paul O'Keeffe following up with a similar effort from the right hand side shortly afterwards. Carraigs shooting form continued with Colm O'Reilly adding his first of the night before full forward Liam Ryan scored after 8 minutes. That however, was to be Carraigs last score of the half, as Glenbower then came back into the game, creating a number of chances while Carraig wasted some great chances. Despite the mounting pressure from the Killeagh men, the Carraig defence was up to the task. Glenbower scored the next three points between and with 20 minutes gone there was just a point between the sides. Aidan Sheehan was in top form in the Carraig goal and he produced a magnificent one handed save to deny Joe Deane a goal, but Carraig did get a let off moments later when Glenbower missed another good goal opportunity, but the ball sailed left of the upright and wide. At half time the score remained Carraig 0-04 Glenbower 0-03.
Carraig regrouped at half time and once again got the better start. Martin Hickey and Shane Horgan dominated midfield, while the half forward line of Con Burns, Paul O'Keeffe and Michael Minehane worked extremely hard to put the pressure on Glenbower at every opportunity. Hickey opened the scoring with a fine point. Colm O'Reilly added a point from a free and Paul Murphy followed this up with a brace of well taken points as Carraig asserted their dominance. Glenbower replied with a point at the other end and a goal line clearance from full back Tony Dunne kept the margin at four points. Hickey swung over a point off his left before Paul O'Keeffe finished off another Carraig attack with a point. A Paul Murphy free put seven points between the sides with ten minutes remaining. Glenbower tried to get back into the game but the Carraig defenders succeeded in limiting their scoring opportunities and they could manage just two further points in reply, as Carraig advanced with five points to spare.
We now advance to meet three in a row chasing Cloyne in the Semi final, which will be played later this Summer. Well done to all involved on reaching this stage.

Carraig na bhFear advanced to the quarter finals of the East Cork Junior A Football Championship with a deserved win over a strong Ballinacurra team. Having last met in the championship in 2008, Carraig knew that Ballinacurra would certainly be no pushovers and so it proved to be, with both sides producing some excellent attacking football over the sixty minutes. A minutes silence preceded the game in memory of our club treasurer Micheál Foley, who passed away the previous Friday.
When the action got under way, Ballinacurra struck first blood with an early point from a free, but already the threat of Carraigs full forward line was evident. Paul Murphy made a great run on the left wing and his fisted effort came back off the upright. Four minutes in and Carraig had a goal. Liam Ryan was on the end of a cross field ball and having shrugged off his man, he finished neatly to the net. Ballinacurra responded with a point from play as both sides created chances. Martin Hickey and Timmy Geaney were doing well at midfield, while the strong running of Paul O'Keeffe created openings for the forwards. Carraig lost centre forward Conor Hegarty to an early injury and he was ably replaced by Ronan Spillane. On ten minutes Carraig stretched their lead, this time Paul Murphy broke onto a loose ball and he picked his spot in the bottom corner to leave Carraig four points in front, 2-00 to 0-02. Murphy was on the scoreboard again with a point from the right corner midway through the half as Carraig continued to create good opportunities in front of goal. A handling error in the Carraig defence resulted in a point for Ballinacurra but Colm O'Reilly replied with a curling effort to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Ballinacurra looked to be in for a goal but a top class save from Aidan Sheehan in goal saw Carraig clear their lines. Ballinacurra did add another point but O'Reilly and Murphy responded with a point each approaching the break. In injury time, a long ball in found the Ballinacurra corner forward behind the defence and he made no mistake to close the gap to a goal, 2-04 to 1-04 at the break.
Carraig turned to play with the slight breeze but it was Ballinacurra who scored first, almost immediately from the throw in, thanks to a fine run and score from their midfielder Scott Richards. Carraig then hit a purple patch, scoring 1-02 in the next five minutes. Liam Ryan was central to this. He kicked the first point of the series after winning a high ball and turning his man to swing the ball over from close range. Paul O'Keeffe was on the end of Carraigs best move of the game, involving Hickey and Spillane, and he finished well for his first point of the night. Another quick ball into the full forward line broke for Ryan, who showed all of his experience to plant the ball into the corner of the net.
Back came Ballinacurra again, adding two points from frees in the 37th and 40th minutes. Carraig continued to create good openings but failed to take some of these, with O'Reilly adding a point to our total just past the midway point of the half. Spillane and Murphy combined well with John O'Sullivan also showing well on the wing throughout the game. Ballinacurra were proving to be dangerous on the counter attack and they fought their way back into the game with 1-02 in quick succession, showing great determination as Carraig were caught on the break. Now there was just a point in it with five minutes remaining. Fresh legs were introduced to good effect and with everyone redoubling their efforts, the momentum swung back to Carraig again. O'Reilly pointed three frees in the closing five minutes and the same player also added the final score from play, as the Carraig forwards pinned Ballinacurra back in their own half. Referee John Buckley blew the final whistle and Carraig had progressed with a five point winning margin to meet Glenbower Rovers in the quarter final on the 9th May.

Junior A's go down to Aghada in league
  23/04/2010

East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 8
Venue: Carraig na bhFear
Carraig na bhFear 0-12 Aghada 2-09

A strong Aghada team took the points on offer in this very competitive Junior Football league match in Carraig on Tuesday, 23rd April. The sides exchanged early scores with Martin Hickey getting Carraigs opening point. Aghada took control and with Carraig struggling to get to grips with the swift play of their opponents, kicked three points to reflect their early dominance on the scoreboard. Carraig responded well and a point from a free by Colm O'Reilly was followed by a second point for the hard working Hickey. O'Reilly levelled matters on twenty minutes but Aghada broke through the Carraig defence soon after to get the opening goal of the game. Another O'Reilly free before the break rounded off the scoring to leave it Aghada 1-04 Carraig 0-05 at the break.
Aghada started the second half much the sharper, tacking on three points without reply inside the opening five minutes of the half. That left Carraig five points down and with much to do, but credit to the team, they continued to try and play their way back into the game. Points from Hickey and O'Reilly reduced the margin to three again, but Aghada cancelled these out with two frees which were successfully converted. O'Reilly was proving to be Carraigs main source of points and he hit the target again after ten minutes. Aghada responded with a second goal on the counter attack. This gave them a comfortable lead but it was Carraig who were to have the better of the closing quarter, with further points from O'Reilly, Hickey and Timmy Geaney closing the margin to three points with time running out. John O'Sullivan was unlucky to see a half chance at a goal just fall the wrong side of the post but Carraig could not come any closer and Aghada held out for a deserved three point win.

Carraig defeat Midleton in Junior A League
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 7
Sun, 11th April

Venue: Carraig na bhFear

Carraig na bhFear 3-13 Midleton 1-03

With the sun shining brightly on a perfecct Sunday morning for football, Carraigs Junior A Footballers took the points on offer against Midleton with a convincing win as preparations continue for the third round of the Championship. While the scoreline suggests the match was one way traffic it certainly didn't start like that. Midleton claimed an early goal when their full forward knocked the ball from the grasp of Aidan Sheehan in the Carraig goal straight into the corner of the net. Carraig settled well however and points from Martin Hickey, Paul Murphy and Brian Galvin levelled the game after ten minutes.
Midleton added a point from a free but were finding chances extremely hard to come by as the Carraig defence was in a mean mood throughout. Further points from Murphy and a Colm O'Reilly free pushed Carraig in front, while three more points before half time from Hickey, Shane Horgan and O'Reilly again extended the home sides lead to leave the half time score Carraig 0-08 Midleton 1-03.
The second half saw Carraig continue to dominate, with Shane Horgan and Conor Hegarty prominent at midfield. Martin Hickey scored an early point before full forward Liam Ryan picked out Brian Galvin in the corner who finished to the net for the games opening goal. This was followed soon afterwards by a second goal, Shane Horgan racing onto the end of a great team move to find the corner of the net. Midleton added two frees to their tally either side of third goal from Hickey, as Carraig closed out the game with further points from Barrie Casey, Paul Murphy, Conor Hegarty with a beauty off his left foot and a 45 from Casey to take the spoils on a 3-13 to 1-03 full time score.

Carraig well on top in Junior B league
East Cork Junior Football League Division 3
Carraig na bhFear 3-15 Lisgoold 0-09
Venue: Carraig na bhFear (College pitch)
29/03/2010

A good win in a high scoring encounter for a youthful Junior B team, when they overcame the challenge of Lisgoold on Monday, 29th March in the College pitch. With the Under 21 team due to take on St. Catherines in the Championship, this was an opportunity for the selectors to give the majority of the Under 21 team some much needed game time. With the Junior A's having lined out the previous day, there were plenty eager to impress the management in the hopes of breaking into the team. Carraig opened the scoring through corner forward Jamie Fouhy but this was quickly cancelled out by a free for Lisgoold which was well converted.
This was as good as it got for Lisgoold however, as Carraig took over and three points from Paul O'Keeffe, together with one from John O'Sullivan, pushed open a four point lead. This was added to midway through the half by a well taken goal from John Healy. Lisgoold pointed from a free again before Fouhy added his second point of the half and Brian Twomey hit the back of the net for Carraigs second goal, to leave the half time score Carraig 2-06 Lisgoold 0-02.

Carraig started the second half in ruthless fashion with substitute John Mullins scoring a third goal for the home side. Another half time sub, Aaron Dorgan, got his name on the scoresheet with a point from play and Carraig held a comfortable 3-07 to 0-2 adavantage, which they maintained throughout the half. A point for Lisgoold was followed by two from Caraig, via Richard Mullins and Brian Twomey, before Lisgoold hit their best period of the game and sent over five unanswered points. Midfielder Noel Mullins broke that run with a fine point before Lisgoold scored their final two points of the game.
Another rally of points for Carraig closed out the game. Richard Mullins, Brian Twomey, Darren Noonan, Noel Mullins and Twomey again rounded off the scoring for Carraig.

Late point sees Carraig overcome Bride Rovers
  28/03/2010

East Cork Junior A Football Championship 1st Round
Venue: Glenville
Carraig na bhFear 1-06 Bride Rovers 0-08

A late Colm O'Reilly point proved to be the difference as Carraig emerged with the win in the first round of the East Cork Junior A Football Championship on Sunday, 28th March, in Glenville. Games between Carraig and Bride Rovers have always been close and this was no exception. While it certainly won't be remembered as a classic, the game was hard fought with neither side giving an inch. The Rovers made the early charge but it was Carraig who were first on the board through Con Burns, who was Carraigs standout first half performer. The Rovers levelled on ten minutes with a point from a free as both sides missed opportunities to add to their tallys. Carraig were playing some good football but were not reflecting it on the scoreboard. A breakthrough came however when Shane Horgan and Con Burns combined on the left wing, Horgans long ball in found Liam Ryan and he advanced around the keeper to finish to the back of the net, to push Carraig into a 1-01 to 0-01 lead midway through the half.
Bride Rovers hit back, two points from play either side of a pointed free in the next ten minutes levelling the score, as Carraig continued to waste good opportunites at the other end. Colm O'Reilly was unlucky to hit the post from a free and despite long periods of pressure, scores were hard to come by. Just before half time, O'Rielly did find the target to leave Carraig a point in front at the break, 1-02 to 0-04.
Almost immediately from the restart, Martin Hickey, who had moved to centre forward during the first half, scored a fantastic point off the outside of his boot to push Carraig into a two point lead. Bride Rovers were still well in the game however and they dominated the next quarter of the match. The Carraig rearguard was under pressure but Timmy Geaney and Diarmuid O'Driscoll lead by example, clearing their lines well on a number of occasions. A point from a free pulled the margin back to a point, before three points from play looked to have Carraig in real trouble. Twice Carraig hit the post again, with the Rovers doing likewise as the game remained in the balance.
Teddy Holland and his selectors unloaded the bench to great effect however. Brian Hegarty was introduced at wing back for the injured Sean Casey, Paul O'Keeffe and Ronan Spillane both came into the full forward line. Carraig weathered the storm and won a free which O'Reilly pointed to narrow the gap to a point. If there was a turning point it came with less than five minutes remaining. Bride Rovers full forward attempted to handpass a point which came back off the crossbar. The ball was gathered by Tony Dunne, passed out to Stephen Casey and Carraig countered down the left wing to brilliant effect, with Martin Hickey levelling the game with another excellent point. The Momentum was with Carraig now, Paul O'Keeffe gathered a great kickout and found Colm O'Reilly on the right wing who slotted the ball over the bar from distance to put us back into the lead again. Carraig pressed on to the end and Bride Rovers could not find the equaliser, as Carraig held on for the narrowest of wins.

Plenty to work on as we enter the draw for round three, which will most likely be in three or four weeks time.

Carraig prepare for Championship with win
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 6
18/03/2010
Venue: Carrigtwohill
Carrigtwohill 1-11 Carraig na bhFear 2-12

Another win for the Junior A Footballers, following an entertaining game in Carrigtwohill on Thursday, 18th March. The home side were quickest out of the blocks, two early points from their dangerous full forward had Carraig on the back foot before Paul Murphy had our opening point. Carrigtwohill were taking their chances well early on however, they added two further points from play and after ten minutes, won a fortuitous penalty, which was converted past reach of Mark Crowley in the Carraig goal to leave Carrigtwohill 1-04 to 0-01 in front. The scoreline at this point was not a true reflection on the game however, with Carraig failing to take a few chances. Undeterred by the goal, Carraig continued to play their football and worked their way back into the game. Timmy Geaney won every ball at full back, which set the platform for a number of attacks for Carraig. Shane Horgan and Barrie Casey were winning the kickouts, while Liam Ryan, Paul Murphy and Bryan Galvin were combining well in attack, with Ryan and Galvin unlucky to both hit the upright and crossbar in the one attack. Points from Con Burns, Shane Horgan, Ronan Spillane and Barrie Casey reduced the gap to two points with just over five minutes to the break, when the hosts scored a point from a free. Shane Horgan added his second point soon afterwards, followed by another from Burns, leaving Carraig trailing by a single point at the break 1-05 to 0-07.
The second half saw Carraig get off to the perfect start. A long ball into the full forward line was won and passed to Bryan Galvin, who sidestepped his man expertly and finished to the back of the net for a goal. Carrigtwohill responded with a point but Carraig stretched the lead with a well taken point from Ronan Spillane, after good patient build up play. Carrigtwohill got back on the board with a close range free and a point from play either side of two points from play via the boot of Colm O'Reilly in the space of a few minutes. Liam Ryan continued to cause problems at full forward, he combined again with Galvin and won a penalty while lining up a goal chance. O'Reilly converted the penalty to extend the Carraig lead. The last ten minutes saw the hosts come back into the game, picking off three points from some sloppy Carraig defending to reduce the lead to three points with time running out. When Carraig did get down the field with the ball, Paul Murphy added another point to round off the scoring for the night. Final score Carraig 2-12 Carrigtwohill 1-11.

Second half goal sees Carraig come out on top
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 5:
Carraig na bhFear 1-08 Erin's Own 0-10
13/03/2010

Carraigs Junior A Footballers made it four league wins on the bounce with a narrow one point win over a skillful Erins Own side in Carraig on Saturday, 13th march.
The opening stages saw both sides miss chances before Carraig opened the scoring after five minutes. Erins Own equalised and continued to press but Carraigs defence applied pressure at every angle to keep their scoring chances to a minimum. At the other end, Colm O'Reilly and Con Burns were causing the visitors problems and three points from Carraig in the middle period of the half, from O'Reilly and midfielder Shane Horgan, extended the lead. Erins Own responded with two points on the break to keep the gap down, while Carraig followed up with two more points after good work from wing back Brian Hegarty and Paul Murphy in the forwards. Erins Own pressed again but more good defending from Carraig meant they could only add one more point to their tally for the half to leave the scoreline Carraig 0-06 Erin's Own 0-04 at the interval.

The second half saw Carraig make a number of changes in personnel, but they got off to the perfect start when Paul Murphy ran onto Shane Horgans pass and pointed from the right corner to extend the lead. It was tit for tat for the next ten minutes, Erins Own closing the gap with two points. Carraig were dealt a blow when Tony Dunne was sent off for his second yellow card offence, but the team readjusted well and were unlucky to see a goal ruled out for a square ball. A free for Carraig just after the midway point kept Carraig in front, with Erins Own replying with another pointed free. Then Carraig got the goal they had been threatening, after some great team work down the left wing, the ball fell to Liam Ryan and the full forward made no mistake to find the back of the net. Carraig now had a 1-08 to 0-07 lead with under ten minutes to play. It was backs to the wall stuff from here on, Erins Own created to goal chances, but a great block by Dee O'Driscoll and a top save from Ollie Murphy in goal kept Carraigs lead intact. Erins Own picked off three points in the closing period to set up a grandstand finish, but Carraigs defence held firm, Conor Hegarty, Timmy Geaney and Brian Hegarty all producing crucial blocks and at the final whistle Carraig had a one point win.

Footballers defeat Ballinacurra
  07/03/2010
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 4
Venue: Colaiste an Chroi Naofa
Carraig na bhFear 3-08 Ballinacurra 1-04

Carraig saw off the challenge of a determined Ballinacurra outfit on a cold, sunny Sunday, 7th March, in the College pitch. Without the services of Under 21 players, it was left to the older brigade to continue the recent good league form. Ballinacurra played with the aid of the stiff breeze in the first half and used this to their advantage to pick off the games opening point early on. Con Burns, playing at wing forward, had Carraigs first point from play, with Colm O'Reilly adding a close range free soon afterwards. More early scoring chances went abegging, as Carraigs passing and shooting was a little off in the early stages. Ballinacurra took advantage of this, levelling with another point from distance before their full forward cut in from the left wing to finish emphatically to the back of the net for a three point lead midway through the half. The response was telling however, Carraig settled, O'Reilly pointed another free and added a point from play after some good work by Paul Murphy and Liam Ryan. A stroke of good fortune saw Carraig take the lead, with a free from 30 yards dropping just under, instead of over the bar from Colm, pushing Carraig back into the lead with less than ten minutes to the break. The goal served to wake Carraig up and Shane Horgan, Conor Hegarty and Paul Murphy all shone in the closing stages of the half, but some wayward shooting was still letting Carraig down. O'Reilly added a point from play and Liam Ryan kicked a great point nearing half time for his first score of the game, to leave Carraig 1-06 to 1-02 in front at the break.
The second half was a low scoring affair. Ballinacurra opened the half with an early point from a free, but Carraigs defence was rarely troubled after this, as both teams battled for possession around the middle of the field for long periods of the half. Carraig replied with two points from frees, with the wides tally also increaing. The games decisive score came midway through the half, substitute Ronan Spillane, operating in the half forward line, linked up well with full forward Liam Ryan and despite a good save on the line initially, Ronan was on hand to finish the ball to the net to push Carraig into a nine point lead. O'Reilly added another goal soon afterwards, and if the first goal had a touch of luck, this one had a touch of deja vu, with the ball dropping under the bar again from a long range free to extend Carraigs lead. Ballinacurra pressed hard in the closing stages but with Timmy Geaney leading in defence, they could not break through for the scores they needed to bring themselves back into the game. A late pointed free completed the scoring, as Carraig collected the points on a scoreline of 3-08 to 1-04.

Junior A's take their chances to see off O'Neills
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 3
20/02/2010
Venue: Colaiste an Chroi Naofa
Carraig na bhFear 2-13 Fr. O'Neills 2-05

Carraig and Fr. O'Neills met in the third round of the Junior Football league in Colaiste an Chroi Naofa and it was Carraig who took the spoils to make it two wins from three in the league to date.
Early pressure from the hosts saw Martin Hickey kick two points from play, with Colm O'Reilly and Paul Murphy adding to the tally to give Carraig a four point lead after the opening ten minutes. Fr. O'Neills made some changes in the middle of the field and this brought them into the game, a goal and a point in quick succession levelling matters just past the midway point of the half. Carraig replied with a point from wing forward Nicky Pike, but it was level again soon after as O'Neills pointed from play. The last ten minutes of the half saw the Carraig defence getting on top however, denying O'Neills time on the ball and setting up a number of good attacks. Paul Murphy added his second point of the half after more good work by Martin Hickey and Shane Horgan at midfield, before full forward Liam Ryan was upended inside the square to win a penalty just before the interval. Colm O'Reilly duly converted the chance to leave Carraig 1-06 to 1-02 ahead approaching the short whistle. There was time for one more point, O'Neills adding a pointed free to their tally to leave three points in it at the break, 1-06 to 1-03 in Carraigs favour.
O'Neills reduced the gap to two after the interval with a point from play, but Carraig responded well to extend the lead. Two points from Paul Murphy, followed by three from O'Reilly, including one from a free, put some daylight between the sides, as Carraig attacked O'Neills at every opportunity. Centre back Matthew Browne and corner back Stephen Casey were both replaced with injuries midway through the half but Carraig continued to press on as a number of substitutes took their chance to impress the management team. Martin Hickey was a danger throughout the half and he added two more points to bring his own tally to four for the day. O'Neills did hit back with a goal and a point in the final ten minutes. Carraig had further chances, Liam Ryan was unlucky to hit the cross bar while Paul Murphy saw another effort come down off the post. Carraig added a second goal late on when a Paul Murphy effort, which the keeper appeared to have covered, took a wicked deflection and the ball found its way to the far corner of the O'Neills net to finish the scoring for the day.

Carraig take the spoils in Killeagh
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Round 2
Glenbower Rovers 0-08 Carraig na bhFear 1-13
Venue: Killeagh

On a perfect Sunday morning for football, Carraig travelled to Killeagh in search of a first win of the new season against Glenbower Rovers. The home side were first to launch an attack, resulting in an early spell of pressure, but the defence held up well and it was Carraig who took the lead on the break through centre forward Conor Hegarty. Glenbower responded and picked up their first point from play soon afterwards. Carraig were causing problems for the Glenbower defence with a good supply of early ball to the forward line, resulting in points for Hegarty and Colm O'Reilly from a free to open an early lead. The middle part of the half belonged to the home side however, who, inspired by the boot of Joe Deane, picked off four unanswered points, two from play and two from frees, to take a two point lead. They also hit the post and the crossbar during this period, Aidan Sheehan pulling off a great save to deny a certain goal.
Carraig steadied the ship however and on 25 minutes, a great team move saw Brian Hegarty get on the end of a pass in front of goal and although his initial effort was well stopped, he slotted the rebound to the far corner of the net as the lead changed hands again. The sides were level again shortly afterwards, but Colm O'Reillys well struck free from the left wing sent Carraig to the break with a narrow lead.
Carraig were quick out of the blocks after the restart. Liam Ryan was causing endless problems at full forward, creating chances for those around him. Brian Hegarty opened the second half scoring, quickly followed by a well struck effort from the left foot of Paul O'Keeffe. Full back Timmy Geaney started and finished an excellent move with a point, before Brian Galvin and Colm O'Reilly (twice) added further points to push Carraig into a seven point lead midway through the half. Glenbower responded with a two further points, but found the Carraig defence in mean mood as they failed to add to their second half tally after this. Carraig continued to create chances, O'Reilly added two points from frees before substitute Jason Noonan chipped a point just over the bar in the closing moments, to leave the final score Carraig 1-13 Glenbower Rovers 0-08.

Defeat for footballers in opening league match
  06/02/10
East Cork Junior Football League Division 1
Carraig na bhFear 0-09 Lisgoold 1-09
Venue: Colaiste an Chroi Naofa

The Junior A Football team started their 2010 league campaign in perfect conditions on Saturyday, 6th February with a three point loss to a sharper Lisgoold outfit. THe match was played in the College pitch, as our own pitch remains closed at the moment due to the heavy rain of recent times. Carraig started slowly and after coughing up a number of early frees, Lisgoold took the lead. Carraig got on the scoresheet after ten minutes through Con Burns and followed this up with a point from Paul Murphy. It was clear that Carraig were showing alot of signs of rust, missed passes and wides were kicked, but the team continued to improve as the half wore on. Lisgoold tied the game up before an excellently taken point from Paul O'Keeffe finished the best move of the half to put Carraig into a narrow lead approaching the break. Lisgoold responded with a well taken goal to leave the half time score Lisgoold 1-02 Carraig 0-03.
Lisgood extended their lead on the resumption, before Carraig started to find a bit of rythym and some good early ball into full forward Paul Murphy and John O'Sullivan in the corner lead to points from Shane Horgan, centre back Timmy Geaney and Paul Murphy from a free to cut the gap to a point. Carraig piled on the pressure, lead by Con Burns at centre forward, but Lisgoold responded well however, adding three points without reply to extend their lead once again. Carraig responded with a free through Paul Murphy, after more good work by the forward line. Lisgoold were not to be caught however, adding on two more points, one from a free, to keep their lead intact with the last ten minutes approaching. As Carraig piled on the pressure, Paul Murphy saw his goal bound shot well saved, Paul Murphy added another fine point from play and Nicky Pike scored his first point fo the day to cut the gap to two with time running out. As Carraig pressed for a winning goal, LIsgoold countered and scored a point to seal a three point win.
While the result will be disappointing, the match will certainly help to blow the cobwebs off the team and alot of positives can be taken from the game.
