Carraig Take League Title with Convincing Win
20/09/2008 U14 Hurling League Final Carraig na bhFear 10-6 Lisgoold 4-12 The under 14's bounced back from their unlucky extra-time defeat to Bride Rovers in the championship final, to claim the league title in emphatic fashion. Playing old rivals Lisgoold -- led by the outstanding John Cashman, and who've had the indian sign over this Carraig team in previous years -- they were determined to make up for previous disappointments. Despite a slow start in which Lisgoold had the upper hand Carraig finished the half strongly, and the two man full forward line of Rory Burke and Fergal Deane looked dangerous every time the ball went in. Two goals from Deane late in the half saw Carraig ahead by a point at half-time, 4-1 to 2-6. Driven on by the industrious James Meehan and Eoin O'Keeffe, Carraig took the game to their opponents in the second half. The excellent long-range free taking of John Forde, a steady defence anchored by Alan Cahill, and wonderful forward play which yielded six further goals, saw Carraig run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 10-6 to 4-12.
Captain Alan Cahill accepted the cup on behalf of his team mates, and paid tribute to the play of a very game Lisgoold team. Well done to all involved, especially trainers Jim Meehan and James Cooney.
The team was:
Joe O'Donnell
Colm Cooney, Kynan Rocks,
James Forde, Alan Cahill, Eoghan Buckley,
James Meehan, John Forde,
Greg McDonnell, Eoin O'Keeffe, Sean O'Sullivan,
Rory Burke, Fergal Deane.
Subs: Ronan Parkinson, Eamon Quinlan, Aaron O'Donoghue, Oisin Crowley.
Under 14's advance to East Cork Final
12/06/2008
East Cork Under 14 Hurling Semi Final Carraig na bhFear 3-13 Aghada 2-7
Carraig na bhFear progressed to the final of the East Cork U14 C Hurling Championship with a well deserved win over Aghada last night. Playing against the wind in the first half, Carraig trailed by 4 points at the interval. But a much improved second half performance, which saw the team make much better use of possession, results in a fine win for the lads. James Meehan scored 2 goals for Carraig, one a cracking effort from a 21 yard free, while James Forde also got another excellent goal, capping the move of the game by collecting a pass from his brother John, before finishing well to the bet. Sean O'Sullivan and Greg McDonnell were influential throughout for Carraig, who now face the winners of Lisgoold V Bride Rovers in the final. Well done lads, keep up the hard work.

21/09/2008 East Cork Under 13 Hurling Championship
Russell Rovers 2-8 Carraig 3-4
The under thirteens bowed out of the championship on Sunday morning after a titanic struggle against Russell Rovers in Shanagarry. Carraig were slow out of the blocks, and Rovers had the better of the early exchanges, and only the excellent defending of Aaron O'Donoghue and Brendan Murphy, backed by good goalkeeping from Christopher Cremin kept them in the game. Rovers led at the interval by four points. A mishit free that travelled straight to the net at the start of the second half left Carraig with a mountain to climb, but the character of the team showed through once again. A massive second half from Eoin O'Keeffe in midfield, aided by the increasingly influential Ryan Galvin, brought Carraig more possession and when Joe O'Donnell doubled Sean O'Sullivan's cross to the back of the net, it was game on. James Forde, now operating at full-forward scored another goal and with time running out Carraig were only a point adrift. One last attack saw subs Conor O'Brien and Richard Murphy combine, the latter's beautifully struck ground shot inching past the post with the keeper beaten. Unfortunately there was time for no more and referee Barry Day blew the final whistle and Carraig were out. A slow start cost them dear but there is no denying the battling qualities of this young side and if they continue to progress like they have this year, their hard work will pay off. Well done, hard luck and keep it up lads!

Carraig beat Youghal in Under 13 Hurling Championship
21/07/2008 Venue: Carraig na bhFear East Cork U13 Hurling Championship
The Under 13 hurlers got their championship off to a great start last night with a victory over Youghal. Playing in front of a large support on their home pitch Carraig were slow to get into their stride, and only the excellence of goalie Christopher Cremin, and the full back line of Ronan Parkinson, Ryan Galvin and Brendan Murphy kept Youghal at bay. Carraig finished the half strongly, and led by four points at this point. Youghal continued to press forward after half time, but by this time Kynan Rocks at centre back and John Forde at midfield were upping the ante, and once more Carraig finished the half strongly, to run out winners by 2-10 to 2-1. Well done lads, keep up the hard work in training.

Under 13's Crowned East Cork Champions after thrilling win
05/04/2008 Venue: Carraig na bhFear
Carraig Under 13's captured the East Cork Football title in fine style on their home pitch on Saturday, 5th April. Opponents and warm favourites Castlelyons were all fired up and scored a goal in their first attack, followed quickly by a point, and Carraig were looking in trouble at this point. However, steady back play by Ronan Parkinson and Man-of-the-Match Eoghan Buckley, soon steadied the ship, and when Joe O'Donnell fisted Eoin O'Keeffe's excellent cross to the back of the Castlelyons net Carraig were back in the game. At half time, Carraig had clawed back the deficit and there was only a point between the teams, Castlelyons 1-5 Carraig na bhFear 1-4. Whatever was said at half time, clearly had a rallying effect on the lads. Carraig really took the game to their opponents on the restart, with Adam O'Sullivan and Oisin Crowley prominent, but midway through the half, Castlelyons scored two identical breakaway goals to leave them four points to the good with only ten minutes to go. At this point the great heart of this young Carraig team became evident. The switch of Eoin O'Keeffe to full forward and James Forde to midfield was key. This saw Carraig regain the initiative, and the team responded with great performances all over the field. Half backs Ryan Galvin and Kynan Rocks were unbeatable in the closing stages, sweeping ball and breaking down opposition attacks regularly and the home team dominated until the final whilste. Well taken goals from Adam O'Sullivan and James Forde, combined with the excellent free taking of team captain Sean O'Sullivan saw Carraig over the finish line. The final whistle sounded and Carraig had run out winners by 3-11 to 3-7.
Bord na nOg Cathaoirleach Regina Abernethy presented Captain Sean O'Sullivan with the trophy. This sparked great scenes of celebration. Congratulations to all involved on what was a deserved and memorable triumph. This team has been steadily improving over the past 2 seasons and they are being rewarded for their effort with this win. Keep up the good work lads, and well done.

U13 B East Cork Football Championship Semi Final Carraig na bhFear 3-10 Russell Rovers 1-0
The semi final of the championship took place on friday last night in Carraig. The team saw one personnel change from the side that defeated Glenville in the opening round, with Ronan Parkinson replacing Richard Murphy. Kynan Rocks gave a commanding performance at centre back, stopping the opposition attacks on numerous occassions. Carraigs
Under fifteens claimed the East Cork C Hurling championship
following a thrilling victory over Lisgoold in the final in Carraig na
bhFear on Sunday, 12th October. Determined to make up for the
disappointing Junior defeat on the previous evening, Carraigs future
stars won open competitive game between two evenly-matched sides. The
game
finished in a welter of excitement with Carraig edging out their
opponents by a single point on a scoreline of 6-6 to 4-13.
Carraig got off to a better start, with Eoin O'Keeffe prominent and
Rory Burke (who was to finish with a personal tally of 4-1), tormenting
the Lisgoold full back line. A succession of frees from the reliable
John Cashman kept Lisgoold in the game, and Carraig full back Michael
Murphy was outstanding when the pressure came on, and Carraig led by
four points at the break. A goal directly on the resumption brought
Lisgoold right into it, and this match flowed first one way then the
other in an enthralling second half. Alan Cahill thundered into the
game at wing back, and Padraig O Sullivan went through a lot of ball at
centre-forward, but Lisgoold had their moments too, and Fergal Deane in
the Carraig goal was called on to make one top class save. Then with
time up Lisgoold broke through for a goal to lead by a single point.
Six minutes of injury time were played, and in this time the character
of the Carraig team showed through, with Joseph Murphy calmly scoring
two massive long-range frees to reclaim the lead and take the victory.
On accepting the trophy team Captain Ciaran Minihane thanked the
mentors -- Jimmy Dorgan, Michael Dunne James Cooney and Jim Meehan, --
and paid particular tribute to a gallant Lisgoold team.
Well done lads, a great victory, keep it up.
The team was:
Fergal Deane
Sean O'Sullivan, Michael Murphy, Colm Cooney
Alan Cahill, Joseph Murphy, Ciaran Minihane,
John Forde, James Forde,
Ger Spillane, Padraig O'Sullivan, Eoin O'Keeffe,
James O'Reilly, Rory Burke, Brian Fitzgerald.
Subs: Joe O'Donell for Fitzgerald, Kynan Rocks for Spillane. |
