Glenbower edge out Carraig after extra time thriller
East Cork Under 21 B Football Championship
Quarter Final
Sat March 26th, Venue - Rathcormac
Carraig na bhFear 4-10 Glenbower Rovers 4-16 (After extra time)

Carraigs Under 21 team lost out in a cracking Under 21 Football Championship quarter final at the excellent Pairc na Bride in Rathcormac last Saturday, when Glenbower Rovers extra time surge saw them advance to the semi final.
Right from the throw in, this game was end to end stuff, not for the defensive purists, as both sides set out their stall to attack. Carraig got an early boost when Jamie Fouhys attempt for a point dropped just short and the Glenbower keeper, under pressure from full forward John O'Sullivan, fumbled and O'Sullivan punched the ball to the net. With 30 seconds barely on the clock, it was a dream start. Back came the Killeagh men, attacking with purpose but some poor finishing let them down. A point from a free was cancelled out shortly afterwards by an excellent point for Carraig off the boot of Aaron Dorgan. Carraigs defence was coping well with the Glenbower surge, with John Mullins and Colm Cooney in particular having great games. However the killeagh pressure told and their wing forward burst through a gap on the right wing to shoot to the Carraig net, his shot deflecting off a defender on its way past Anthony McGinty in the Carraig net. Two quick points for Glenbower added to their tally and midway through the half they lead 1-03 to 1-01.
But Carraig responded well. Noel Mullins worked tirelessly at midfield and Jamie Fouhy, Brian Twomey and the Dorgan brothers, Aaron and Cian, were causing all kinds of problems. Two points from the boot of Twomey, one from a free, levelled the game, before a great move and display of quick first time passing, involving five Carraig players from wing back up, saw Cian Dorgan break through and rattle the net for a second goal. Jamie Fouhy added a fine point from the right wing after this and Carraig were back in front, 2-04 to 1-03. But the game swung back in Glenbowers favour again and with their forwards now finding their range, they began to claw back the lead, with five unanswered points over the next ten minutes. Only for the brilliant defending of Mullins, they could have been through for a goal on at least one occassion. Carraig responded again however and Brian Twomey knocked over a last minute free to leave the score Carraig 2-05 Glenbower 1-08 at the short whistle.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. Brian Twomey pointing again for Carraig, but Killeagh then split the young Carraig defence open again and blasted home their second goal to put them back in command. Credit to Carraig however, they responded in great fashion. Jamie Fouhy pointed from a free, before Cian Dorgan and John O'Sullivan showed great commitment to pick off two difficult points in the space of a minute, to put Carraig back in front. Midway through the second half, Carraig struck again. Jamie Fouhys free was caught under the cross bar by the keeper, but the inrushing John O'Sullivan fisted it from his hands to the net. Despite the Killeagh protests, the goal stood and Carraig were now four points to the good. Carraig continued to press, with young Padraig O'Sullivan taking on the home defence time and again to great effect, but the tiring Carraig legs were beginning to show and some weak efforts that could have been points instead fell short. Glenbowers strength began to show and they pressed on again, picking off a sequence of points in the closing ten minutes. Carraig again had a couple of great chances to add to their lead, but agonisingly these again dropped short. Some excellent defending again by Mullins, aided by Paul Geaney, Shane O'Reilly and Aaron Dorgan, kept them at bay but with two minutes remaining, they struck for the equaliser and despite the best efforts of the Carraig attack, the game was headed for extra time after a most entertaining 60 minutes, Carraig 3-09 Glenbower 2-12 at full time.
The early stages of the first of of extra time were tight, as the sides exchanged points. Glenbower struck first, with a lovely effort from their corner back. John O'Sullivan on target again for Carraig. But a crossfield pass with a few minutes remaining of the half split Carraig wide open and despite the best efforts of McGinty in goal, he could not prevent the ball nestling into the corner of the net for a crucial score. That goal left Carraig trailing by three at the break. With Carraig legs now visibly tiring, Glenbower pressed on and a fortunate goal early into the second period put them six points in front. Two more points extended their lead, but Carraig did not give up. Great work from Fouhy, Cian Dorgan and Twomey kept them driving on and when Cians long pass was brilliantly collected by Padraig O'Sullivan, he was hauled down for a penalty. John O'Sullivan finished to the net to claim his hatrick but time ran out for Carraig as Glenbower added the final score to run out winners on a 4-16 to 4-10 scoreline.
Well done to the team and their Management of Jimmy Hickey, Brian Hegarty and Colm O'Reilly, it was not to be on the day but there were many positives to take from the teams performance.

Erins Own defeat Carraig to take Under 21 title
  04/05/2010
East Cork Under 21 B Football Final
Venue: Midleton
Carraig na bhFear 1-06 Erins Own 1-10

Carraig na bhFear went down to a stronger and better balanced Erins Own team in the final of the East Cork Under 21 B football Championship on the May bank holiday. The game took a while to get going before Alan Bowen had Erins Owns opening point from a free. Carraig were guilty of dropping a number of good chances short into the keepers hands early on but made a breakthrough on ten minutes. Brian Twomey collected a great pass and cut through the defence, before passing the ball to the back post where Jamie Fouhy rushed in to fist the ball to the back of the net. Despite fine performances from Martin Hickey and Darren Noonan at midfield, Carraig were unable to add to their goal during the first half. Erins Own added a second free, before Padraig O'Sullivan made a great save to deny them a goal. The pressure continued to mount but the Carraig defence was in mean mood, Jason Noonan and Michael Minehane clearing their lines well on a number of occassions. Two further points however, one from a free, gave Erins Own a slender one point lead at the interval.
Carraig needed to make a bright start to the second half but it was Erins Own who were first on the board with a point. Then game a goal for Erins Own. Carraig won a kickout but the passing out of defence broke down and Erins Own counter attacked, exploited the overlap and Sean Crowley finished to the back of the net. This put Erins Own firmly in the driving seat. Carraig were not about to lie down however. Paul O'Keeffe, Aaron Dorgan and Martin Hickey came into the game, with Hickey getting Carraigs first point before O'Keeffe added a free after some good work by John O'Sullivan. Daniel Coleman, Richard Mullins and John Walsh drove Carraig on and the sides exchanged points again, with O'Keeffe on target again as Carraig began to pile on the pressure. Hickey added another point and then a quick free from Darren Noonan found O'Keeffe, who was desperately unlucky as his shot rattled the crossbar from 20 yards with the keeper stranded.
O'Keeffe added another point but Erins Own dug out a point of their own to stay three in front. Carraig continued to press and another free from O'Keeffe closed the gap again but Erins Own closed out the match with two well taken points to win by four.
Hard luck to Carraig but credit to Erins Own who are worthy champions. This Carraig team put a great effort into the championship this season but it was not to be.

Carraig progress to East Cork Final with win over Glenville
East Cork Under 21 B Football Championship
Semi Final
Venue: Glanmire
Sun 18th April

Carraig na bhFear 3-15 Glenville 1-09

Carraig na bhFear qualified for the East Cork Under 21 B Football final with a deserved win over Glenville in Glanmire on Sunday night last. Carraig lead from the off, with Paul O'Keeffe finding the target with the first chance of the game. A well worked move down the right wing saw Noel Mullins extend the lead with a fisted point. This was followed by the games opening goal. Martin Hickeys pinpoint pass found O'Keeffe in space, who carried the ball twenty yards before dispatching it clinically to the net. Having dominated the opening stages, Carraig were then made to work harder as Glenville came back into the game, this despite being reduced to 14 men after their full back picked up an early second yellow card. The sides swapped points, with Hickey on target from long range for Carraig, before Glenville sent over three frees without reply to work their way back into the game. Carraig responded well, driven on by Hickey and Darren Noonan who were dominating the midfield battle, as O'Keeffe added two further points. Carraig lost Noel Mullins to injury after 20 minutes but he was ably replaced by Brian Twomey at wing forward.
A mistake on the Carraig defence lead to a Glenville goal which threw the game wide open again, as Glenvilles confidence began to grow. Glenville added two points either side of another Hickey point as Carraig drove forward again. Carraig rattled the Glenville crossbar in the closing minutes as the Dorgan brothers, Cian and Aaron, linked up well, before a fine move from defence, started by Michael Minehane and carried on Hickey and O'Keeffe, saw full forward John O'Sullivan shoot low to the net for a second goal to leave Carraig with a 2-06 to 1-06 lead at the break.

Carraig were first to score on the resumption, a long range Cian Dorgan free splitting the posts. Livewire corner forward Jamie Fouhy, who worked tirelessly all night, then added a fine point after winning a great ball before Glenville had their opening point of the half, again from a free. Hickey was winning the majority of kickouts, giving Carraig a great platform to build on, the defence was solid, with Daniel Coleman sweeping up as the extra man in defence. O'Keeffe added another point, followed by two more from Hickey. Glenville added two frees late on in between a further series of Carraig points. O'Keeffe again, Brian Twomey and another for Cian Dorgan extended the lead. The game was put beyond doubt when Fouhy raced onto a low ball and neatly first timed the ball to the corner of the net to seal the outcome. Paul O'Keeffe, who opened the scoring, had the final say with another sweetly struck point as Carraig progressed to the final. This was a great team display and the lads can now look forward to a final date with Erins Own or Glenbower Rovers in a few weeks time. Final score Carraig 3-15 Glenville 1-09.

Under 21's defeat St.Catherines in quarter final
  03/04/2010
East Cork Under 21 B Football Championship
Venue: Castlelyons
Carraig na bhFear 4-17 St. Catherines 0-03

After receiving a walkover from Cloyne in the first round, Carraig got their Under 21 football campaign up and running with what proved to be a much easier than expected win over St. Catherines in Castlelyons. In truth, the game was over early as Carraig not only camped, but lived in the St. Catherines half throughout the first half.
Early drives from midfield opened up the Catherines defence and Carraig raced into a three point lead against the stiff breeze, Brian Twomey, Jamie Fouhy and Martin Hickey all pointing in between some wides. Jamie Fouhy was the brightest attacker on view in the opening half, his sharp running and neat skill saw him get onto the end of a fine move to finish confidently to the corner of the net on ten minutes. With Hickey and Darren Noonan on top at midfield, Carraig enjoyed the lions share of possession and further points came via the accurate boot of Paul O'Keeffe, who added four points in a row, including two from frees to extend the lead. The defence was alert when tested with Paul Geaney and Jason Noonan intercepting a number of passes. A good move involving a number of forwards saw Hickey race onto the ball and finish to the net from 10 yards to leave the half time score Carraig 2-07 St.Catherines 0-0.
Catherines spirit is to be commended however, they came out in the second half and opened the scoring with a point from a free, but there was to be no comeback. O'Keeffe opened Carraigs account before two goals in the space of three minutes added to the tally. Full forward John O'Sullivan won and converted a penalty, before he set up Brian Twomey to get Carraigs fourth goal. O'Keeffe scored another excellent point before Richard Mullins and Aaron Dorgan added their names to the scoresheet with two fine points from play. Catherines replied with two pointed frees in the closing stages as Carraig saw the game out with three points from O'Keeffe, two for O'Sullivan and one for Cian Dorgan. Carraig will not have learned much from this but one thing will have to be improved on was the huge tally of 22 wides, which on another day, could prove costly. Next up Carraig will face the winners of the Cobh/Glenville tie in the semi final in a few weeks time.
