East Cork Minor B Hurling Championship
Semi Final
Venue: Watergrasshill
Carraig na bhFear 1-16 Bride Rovers 1-01

Carraig na bhFear produced an excellent display of committed hurling to advance to the East Cork Minor B Hurling final, defeating Bride Rovers on a comprehensive 1-16 to 1-01 scoreline. From the off Carraig pressed hard and denied Bride Rovers time and space on the ball. Padraig O'Sullivan opened the scoring with an excellent sideline cut from 30 yards out on the left. From the puckout, the same player had the first point from play. Carraig were enjoying some dominance in the half back and midfield areas, with Paul Geaney popping up time and again in the right place to clear the ball. A point from midfielder John Forde, after great work by John Healy and Padraig Dunne, was quickly followed by two frees from the stick of Aaron Dorgan. Corner forwards Jamie Fouhy and Padraig Dunne were showing well and both added points to make the score 0-07 to 0-0 midway through the half.
Bride Rovers responded with a period of pressure, but some excellent defending from James Cooney, James Meehan and John Mullins, plus the solid goalkeeping of Michael Dinan kept the Rovers attack scoreless. When Carraig did break out, it was to good effect. A long ball in to the square from Dorgan was broken down by full forward Podge Dineen, and in the ensuing scramble in the goalmouth, it was Jamie Fouhy who reacted quickest to fire the ball to the net. Another pointed free from Dorgan shortly afterwards left the half time scoreline Carraig 1-08 to 0-0 in front.
Bride Rovers needed a good start to the second half if they were to have any chance of closing the deficit. Despite some early pressure, two missed frees were only followed by a point from a 65. Carraig took a hold again, with Padraig O'Sullivan starring at centre forward in this half. He hit the first point fo the half, while Aaron Dorgan, who also had an excellent second half, added two further points from play. The defence continued to clear any danger, the full back line of Mike Murphy, James Cooney and Keith Lomasney preventing any goal scoring chances. O'Sullivan scored another fine point from the right wing after some great team work, before young Joe Murphy landed a huge free from half way, followed quickly by a 65 from the same player. Dorgan was on target again from a free, before the move of the game almost resulted in a second Carraig goal. A great move between O'Sullivan and Dorgan split open the Rovers defence, before Dorgan hit a bullet of a shot that went inches over the crossbar. This was to be Carraigs last score as Bride Rovers pressed late on. A late 21 yard free found the net for a consolation goal, but Carraig progressed to meet Cobh in the final on Sat 4th September.
This was a great performance by the team, who have shown steady improvement all year. The hooking, blocking and point scoring was all of great quality on the night and if the team can continue to improve, then they will be in with every chance against a strong Cobh team in the final. Well done to all involved.

Clinical Lisgoold advance
  24/07/2009
East Cork Minor B Hurling Championship
Venue: Rathcormac
Carraig na bhFear 0-08 Lisgoold 4-19

Carraig na bhFear were knocked out of the East Cork Minor B Championship by a stronger Lisgoold team in Rathcormac at the first round stage. This was a disappointing result for the team, who were without the services of some key players through injury and holidays. The real damage was done in the first half, as Lisgoold raced into an early and substantial lead, after Cian Dorgan had levelled the scoring early on for Carraig at a point a piece. Notching up 1-11 without reply, Lisgoold showed some great team work and after Padraig Dineen had Carraigs second point of the half, they added another 1-01 before the interval to lead comfortably at half time on a scoreline of 2-13 to 0-02.
Carraig kept working, determined to put in a better second half showing. Cian Dorgan traded early points with Lisgoold and while a comeback always seemed out of reach, it is to the teams credit that they stuck to their task for the 60 minutes. Lisgoold scored two more goals, while Carraig had points from John Healy, Aaron Dorgan and Cian Dorgan from frees, to bring the final score to Lisgoold 4-19 Carraig 0-08.
While the result may suggest otherwise, this team has shown real improvement this season under the coaching of Brian & Aidan Hegarty, Don Hegarty and Pat Noonan, with most of this young team underage again next year, there is no doubt further improvement can be made. Beidh lá eile againn, until then, keep up the hard work!

Minors defeated by Fr.O'Neills

17/07/2008
Venue: Castlelyons
Fr. O'Neills 4-14 Carraig na bhFear 1-09

Carraig na bhFear bowed out of the Minor A hurling championship with a defeat to a strong and talented Fr.O'Neills side in the first round at Castlelyons last night.
O'Neills opened the scoring with the first two points of the match, but Carraig replied with two points from Cian Dorgan, both from 65's. Carraig were playing against the wind but were finding the O'Neills defence tough to break through against. Carraigs defence was resolute and very determined, lead by Jason Noonan and Paul Geaney. However O'Neills began to take a grip on proceedings, firstly adding two more points, then getting their opening goal midway through the half. Carraig replied with another free from Cian, before O'Neills added another point from a free themselves. Brian Twomey had Carraigs first point from play shortly afterwards, before Cian followed this up with another pointed free, which was again cancelled out by another point for O'Neills. The final score of the half came from a 65 which Cian slotted over to leave the half time score 1-06 to 0-06 in favour of O'Neills.
Carraig made some changes at the start of the second half, bringing out young goalkeeper Padraig O'Sullivan to corner forward and putting Steve O'Donovan between the sticks. The intensity of the O'Neills challenge was raised considerably after the resumption however. Jonathan Murphy scored an early point to reply to their first score of the half, but the next period of the game belonged to O'Neills, as they had the next five points, all from play, to open up an eight point lead going into the third quarter. O'Neills were playing very well now, a goal soon after extended the lead again, before John O'Sullivan replied with a point for Carraig. O'Neills had another point, this time from a free, to maintain their lead. Carraig were not out of it however, and another long range Cian Dorgan free found its way to the back of the net to keep the challenge alive as the lads battled hard to come back. However, the vital next score went to O'Neills, who replied with their third goal of the night. They followed this up with another point form a 65, before finishing off the game with their fourth and final goal with less than 10 minutes remaining. Cian Dorgan had one more free from Carraig to round off the scoring, 4-14 to 1-09.
Defeat for Carraig but the team and their management can be proud of their efforts and the performance they put in, against a talented Fr. O'Neills side who will have a major say in the latter stages of this competition.
Best wishes to Duncan Casey, who was substituted during the first half having picked up an injury, which hopefully will prove not to be too serious.

Youghal take league points
  02/07/2008

Carraig na bhFear 0-11 Youghal 3-10

After a long break due to the leaving cert exams, Carraig resumed their minor A league campaign with a defeat to Youghal in Carraig on Wednesday last. Carraig showed the signs of the break in the early stages, and took some time to get going. Youghal raced into a commanding early lead, aided by two goals.  Carraig settled and after an opening point from Cian Dorgan, they exchanged points with Youghal through the accurate free taking of John O'Sullivan, with 3 points, and a point from full forward Robert O'Driscoll. The half time scoreline read Carraig 0-5 Youghal 2-08.
The second half saw Carraig set up camp in the Youghal half of the pitch, and the team played with purpose as they tried to close the gap. Paul Geaney, Aaron Dorgan,  Robert O'Driscoll, Brian Twomey and O'Sullivan again from frees all found the target, and it was 25 minutes in before Youghal scored in the second half. When they did score however, it was in the form of a goal and that ended hopes of a Carraig victory. Final score Carraig 0-11 Youghal 3-10, but the lads can take great encouragement from their fine second half display, as they focus on their upcoming championship match against Fr. O'Neills.
