Carraig Minors back to winning ways

08/12/2007
Carraig na bhFear 1-11 Fr. O'Neills 1-09

After the disappointment of loosing to Macroom in last weekend's Football County League semi-final replay, our Minor hurlers once again showed what stern stuff they're made of, coming out on top of a very tough battle against Fr. O’Neills in the East Cork League Semi-Final played Saturday in windswept conditions in Rathcormac.

Carraig had to play into a gale force wind in the first half and found themselves adrift by 5 points after the first 10 minutes, at this stage they worked the ball forward and with a final pass picking out Aaron Dorgan on his own, he made no mistake in finishing to the net. This boost was short lived, within two minutes O’Neills had the ball in the back of the Carraig net. Carraig failed to leak any more goals in the first half and this was very important, as we were able to keep O’Neills in our sight for the turn around. At half time the score was 1-8 v 1-2 to O'Neills.

The second half saw some dogged defending by the O'Neills side and Carraig found it very hard to penetrate this defence in the first ten minutes of the second half. From here on we started to get more on top of the game, resulting in a steady flow of points to bring us back within a point. At this stage Fr. O'Neills scored a well worth point against the gale force wind to keep them 2 points ahead with 7 minutes remaining. We had some great second half performances from the half back line trio of John Walsh, Richard Mullins and Jason Noonan. Martin Hickey and Paul O’Keeffe worked their socks of in the middle of the field and when the game was in the fire young Paul Geaney stepped up to the plate to pick of a point for himself. Now we were one point down. Then Martin Hickey pointed a long range free, followed by a point from play to put Carraig into the lead for the first time late in the game. At the death, John O'Sullivan worked very hard to get himself free of his marker and was rewarded with the final point of the game. 1-11 to 1-9 the final score.
This was a very good overall team performance, where every player played his heart out. With the attitude and determination of players like Daniel Coleman, Brian Twomey and Robert O'Driscoll to mention just a few it's no wonder that this team is hard to beat. Next up are Carrigtwohill in the League final.

Macroom come out on top
  01/12/2007
Macroom 2-6 Carraig na bhFear 0-5
Our Minor Footballers were once again in action this weekend, when they resumed battle with Macroom, this time in Macroom. The match was played in tough underfoot conditions, with a strong wind and plenty rain throughout the 60 minutes. Both sides started slowly, and Macroom were first off the mark with 2 points inside the first 10 minutes. Despite creating a number of good chances, Carraig failed to score in these early exchanges as Macroom defended well and made life difficult for the forwards. Midway through the half, Macroom took control of the game with two goals in the space of a minute. Carraig now found themselves 8 points adrift and facing an uphill battle. To the teams credit, they rallied well, and finally got off the mark with a point from a Brian Twomey free, the Macroom attacks were now being stemmed and Carraig were on top. Another point was added before half time to leave two goals between the sides.

The second half was once again an even contest, with both sides exchanging points throughout. However, despite putting constant pressure on the Macroom backs, With Paul O'Keeffe and Brian Twomey playing their hearts out, Carraig were unable to get the scores that would get them back into the contest. The two goal margin built up midway through the first half proved to be the difference at the final whistle, Macroom running deserving winners on a scoreline of 2-6 to 0-5. Best for Carraig were Robert O'Driscoll, Paul O'Keeffe, Darren Noonan and Brian Twomey.
Hard luck and commiserations to the lads.

Team:
Noel Bowen,
Robert O'Driscoll, Daniel Coleman, Jason Noonan
Richard Mullins, Michael Minehane, Darren Noonan
Paul O'Keeffe, Martin Hickey

Carraig and Macroom must meet again

Carraig na bhFear 1-15 Macroom 3-9 (AET)

Carraig na bhFear entertained Macroom in the County A Minor League Football semi-final on Saturday, the 24th November. The game started at a slow pace,
with the teams taking a while to get the measures of each other. Macroom were the first on the score sheet leading by 2 points before Carraig began to find
their bearings in front of goal. From this point on the game was played in a very competitive and entertaining fashion. Both sets of players displayed a
high level of skill and teamwork. There were some marvellous aerial duels at midfield between the two Cork Minors, Martin Hickey and Rory Buckley. Carraig
had the majority of position but squandered some good scoring chances. The highlight of the first half from a Carraig point of view had to be the point scoring
of Paul O’Keeffe. Paul popped over 4 well taken points in the first half, causing endless problems for the Macroom backs. Despite the wasted
chances, we were well on top and leading at half time through a very well taken goal by Brian Twomey on a score line of 1-6 to 0-4.

But the game was far from over, when Macroom scored 1-2 early in the second half. Now the fat was in the fire with both sides exchanging the lead on a number of

occasions. Carraig slowly regained the initiative and led by 3 points with full time coming up. Macroom however weren’t going to die and applied a lot of
pressure on our defence. An effort at a point from Macroom came back down off the post into the grateful hands of their full forward and they managed to score
a goal in the last minute of normal time. Full time score line 1-11 to 2-8.

Extra time was on the cards. Macroom had the first point, but Carraig was able to put 3 points on the board through some great teamwork. In the second half of extra
time Carraig seemed to be getting the upper hand scoring another point. But again, Macroom fought till the end and were rewarded with a goal in the last
second of extra time. Final Score 1-15 v 3 -9.

So we will have to do it all over again!

The replay has been fixed for next Saturday the 1st December in Macroom at
2.30pm.

Great credit must go to both teams for this game and all the players have to be complimented on their effort, skill and determination. All played their part in a
magnificent match which was a pleasure to watch, and certainly this teams best display of the year to date. We are certainly looking
forward to the replay!

Minors advance to league semi final
  19/11/07
Carraig na bhFear 2-10 St. Vincents 1-08

Carraig travelled to St.Vincent’s on Sunday the 18th to play in the first round of the Minor A County League. The first half was hard fought in which the sides were evenly matched. The half ended with a point between the sides. Three points to two, Carraig in the lead. Halfway through the first half we lost Noel Mullins with a broken hand. Being already without key players we had to call on the U-16 players, Paul Geaney, Aaron Dorgan and J.Healy to step up to the plate, which they did admirably.

The second half started at a high tempo with Vincent’s drawing level. Then a long-range speculative ball from Paul O’Keeffe ended up outfoxing the Vincent’s keeper and ended up in the net. This put Carraig a goal up. From here on Carraig upped the tempo with a well-worked point from Cian Dorgan, then a magnificent free from Cork Minor Martin Hickey from 35 yards sailed between the posts. Vincent’s did not give up and dragged back a couple of scores themselves. Carraig added another with a wonderful point by Aaron Dorgan, showing great composure for such a young player. Vincent’s attacked at every opportunity but their way forward was blocked by a rock solid full back line, with Daniel Coleman coming out with ball after ball. Michael Minehane, assisted by Richard Mullins and Eanna Clifford had a very good game at centre back covering alot of ground. Vincent’s constant pressure was eventually awarded with a penalty and they made no mistake, but Carraig were not going to be denied. A long-range ball was sent in from Martin Hickey, which John O’Sullivan got a hand to, and the ball was in the back of the net. Further points from John O’Sullivan, Martin Hickey and Duncan Casey saw Carraig win out on a score line of 2-10 to 1-8

Well done to the Minor footballers, who beat St. Vincents in the County Minor A football league quarter final on sunday.
