East Cork U21 B Football Championship
1st Round, Sat 5th March
Fr. O’Neills 7-7 Carraig na bhFear 1-04.
No joy for our Under 21 footballers who suffered a comprehensive 7-7 to 1-04 defeat to a slick Fr. O’Neills outfit on Saturday last in Aghavine. While the final scoreline gives no doubt as to the result, it doesn’t tell the whole story and this young Carraig team gave everything they had on Saturday last. The sides were level after 20 minutes of play, 0-04 to 1-1, when the game swung decisively. A Carraig shot rattled the crossbar and from the resulting clearance, O’Neills swept downfield to poach a second goal and take control of the tie. Another goal and a brace of quick points before the break and suddenly the scoreboard read 0-04 to 3-3 in the home sides favour.
A powerful second half display from O’Neills put the game well beyond doubt. They will have a major say in the destination of this championship. For Carraig that is the end of the road, an unfortunate outcome of a championship which is rushed through at the beginning of the season. The lads will now have to rebound for the Junior Football championship in a few weeks time and they will also have their eye on the U21 Hurling championship later this summer. Keep working hard lads!
